Just gonna sort some new Norton AV software but....
....... because i'm tight i dunno which to go for. I presently have a very out of date Norton Systemworks 2003 and Norton Internet security 2005 which is just out of date. Just had a look on for some up to date software and the new versions of both my present programmes are very similar in price. I don't wanna cough up for both so which is the one to have?

I'm sure someone will suggest a much better alternative than Norton, there are some good free ones going about.
Personally, I'd rather have a virus on my computer...

Hmm hadn't heard of nod32. Looks quite good. I've been using AVG for the past few years since having horrendous issues with Norton way back when.
Think I'll give nod32 a try tonite. Cheers guys!

Nod32 is an excellent product that has very regular updates & good protection against both viruses & malware. There is a free 30 day trial version, but make sure that you disable any other AV software before you install. If you have Norton, always uninstall & completely remove it before installaing any other AV software. You may need to download some special uninstall software from the Norton site to make sure it's completely gone.

Cheers guys - Running Nod now
Out of interest though - what is the difference between the two norton programmes? Do they not both do more or less the same?
Oh yeah - how much is Nod after the trial?

Nod just sits there quietly.

Norton brought my PC to its knees so I chucked it in favour of Alarm Zone from Zonelabs. It's got the lot AV, firewall, intrusion detection, spam filter etc - very pleased with the security and no performance issues either. You can try it for nothing here.
Cheers

I also DL'd Nod32 yesterday - seems OK so far, miles better than Norton, although it seemed to run into a lot of locked files when doing it's thing - most of them looked like adware...

Beleive me - reinstalling XP has been on my to do list for ages - my current install has been on there since I got the laptop 4 years ago - startups take ages.
Trouble is I'm so snowed under with work I couldnt afford the time to do it - and finding all my software to put back on may take a while... and it would probably take me another day to back all my stuff up.

Don't worry too much about the locked files when doing a manual in depth scan, many files are normally locked when they are in use - for instance the pagefile.
The price for Nod32 is £27.03 incl VAT for 1 year.
You can tidy your registry by using the 30 day free trial of JV16 tools that includes a nifty easy to use registry cleaner.
Use the free trial of Ewido to look for any odd spyware hanging about.
