I am a computer newbie/numpty...I have braodband in my home office room, and want to create a wireless connection to my laptop in my bedroom, simply to browse the net on...

I'm told that I need a wireless router and woreless card or something...I dont want to spend much and need recomendations on a cheap but effective home setup, I only surf the net, the bedroom is next to the office room, about 10m away max....

Please advise, and any links etc welcomed!

£45 for a router may limit your options, however going up to £60-70 would help. Id save a little if you cant stretch to that now, this question gets asked very often and i usually link people to this

depending on what type of net you have depends on what one to get, cable connections need a broadband router whereas non cable broadband needs an adsl router (tiscali, plus net etc). People on here at this price range usually go for belkin, netgear or linksys, id get a matching wireless card to go with it

even if I did buy it from Comet (god forgive me) as a package deal with a pcmcia card for the laptop and a usb dongle too.

Fuzz does that netgear router allow wireless connection from a laptop? i.e I only have a laptop in my house and am getting Tiscali broadband and want wireless access around the house, laptop has centrino mobile technology aswell could anyone help or explain please?

well I just browsed to this page on the lappy running a WPN511 Netgear rangemax wireless pcmcia card so I guess it does.

buy it like I did with the bundled pcmcia card for the lappy and you'll be sorted.

(Your laptop will require a 32Bit PC Cardbus slot. This is a small slot about the width of a credit card and 5mm high)

do I stiil need the pcmcia card even tho the laptop is supposed to be wireless, it's a Dell inspiron with centrino.

looking back on the post all you actually need is an access point if you only have the one laptop....

Cheers Fuzz, wouldn't I need a ADSL one thoughrather than MBPS? had a look can't find one?

Just had a quick scan through of the small print on a few devices and all access points seem to require a network switch further up the line somewhere, so kinda defeating the object other than extending an already intergrated network.
I've learnt something

Back to square one then..
wont go far wrong with the DG834G/GT (I have the GT, bit more expensive but is 108Mbs instead of 54Mbs with the right adapter)
