Default tiscali broadband slow downloads

after upgrading my broadband package from 256k to 512k i have encounterd problems

my download speeds have only increased to approx 290k

i have sent countless emails, the connection seams to drop out for no real reason and sumtimes i can not quickly rejoin

they sugested i ring there national number for help and so they could do a diagnostic test

the n00b on the other end of the phone line (call centre sumwhere miles away, sounded like indian) had me double checking i had the modem plugged in

she was very quiet, i could harldy understand her english and she was pissing me off bigstyle

she then told me to disable everything in the startup to see if that was clashing with the modem, i disagreed with this, theres stuff in there which i need for the laptop like the thumbpointer etc etc

anyway i got pissed of and hung up, i could hear sumbody else trying to call me (customer) and i have no idea how much the call was costing me (i was on the line ages and was getting nowhere fast)

does anybody have any decent ideas why this would happen, sumtimes i get a usb bandwith error, i told tiscali in an email that i have no other usb devices installed, and they replied with "make sure all other usb devices are unplugged

i think the modem is fooked?

ffs do a diagnotic test tiscali you muppets, if this is not resolved by the end of the week im bailing and going elsewhere

have you been to adslguide.org and run the speed checker?
There is also a utility you can download Dan someone or others speed tester that might help.

We wholesale re-sell tiscali broadband and to be honest I was nervous as **** because they have never had a great name but to their credit its been reliable and speedwise pretty good.

Broadband Speed Test Results
Results from broadband speed test recorded on Tuesday, 09 August 2005, 11:35.

Your Connection
Direction
Actual Speed
True Speed (estimated)

Downstream 233 Kbps (29.1 KB/sec) 251 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 245 Kbps (30.6 KB/sec) 264 Kbps (inc. overheads)

'Actual Speed' is the amount of useful data that your connection can transmit/receive per second. The 'True Speed' figure includes an approximation of data overheads (non-useful data) and is estimated to be around 8%. 'True Speed' is for informational purposes only and is not used in any ISP rankings.

NOTE: Your downstream speed result is very low for the type of connection specified (ADSL/RADSL, 512Kbps). We strongly recommend that you check your Internet connection is not being used elsewhere during the test and/or contact your ISP to resolve speed issues you may be experiencing.
