I got my girlfriends Mum and Dad one last week, had a whole weekend to play with it before I had to hand it over and its a spectacular little machine. Saving up for one myself to act as a little media centre under the telly.
They only got the 1.25 with the lowest memory but it seemed to cope quite well, the only time it slowed was during heavy file transfer, obviously because of the slow HD. Like all macs on OSX though, I'll bet a bit more RAM and it will fly.
I think I will be going for the 1.25 when I get together enough, it will be plenty fast enough for what I need, especially with Mac Massive upstairs.

I've got the 1.25 with 512MB ram
Got airport and bluetooth too.
Love it... in fact, I've hardly been on the PC all weekend! (apart from a bit of CS: Source)

Hello
I don't really understand why anyone would want this? Well, I DO as it's really cool, but from a functionality perspective it's a low-spec'd computer. If I want to play movies, mp3's I would use a chipped Xbox.
Steve.

We have 2 G5s at work but I am seriously thinking about getting a Mini for home so I don't need to lug the G5 backwards and forwards...very nice wee machines and the spec is fine!!

Change the fan on the Xbox and it's V quiet .
Xbox + Softmod + Media player £99 and whatever you pay for a quiet fan.
I'm with Boxst on this one

Unless of course you want the ability to have a PC and a media centre at the same time, all in a much smaller box than an Xbox or a PC.
Coupled with the fact that processor power is irrelevant in OSX.

guys missing the point again
thread started because he had one and loved it and it was just ideal for what burr wanted.
yes we know it is low specced but that is its market right now, low end, low specced, no frills, does the job etc
lets not start another pc/mac (and now xbox) argument.
oh and it's not the mac mini's fault that it has one of the most stable, advanced. virus, spyware free operating systems around

I quite fancy getting one of these, but how would you go about using it as a media centre.
Can you capture tv with it and then playback through the TV?

I'm not sure it's suited as a media player due to the lack of decent video and optical outputs, but that may change in future. I'll probably get one to replace my Cube at some point, but it won't sit under my TV just yet
Yesterday I was watching some HDTV SuperBowl ads on a brand new TOTR 15" PowerBook and even that had some judder full screen, they run perfectly fine on a G5 though.

But isn't that the market it is aimed at?

Terminal emulation screw up, so I can't actually edit my sentences properly, make up the typos as you go along

I wanted once a as HTPC, but on doing some reading it's not that great at it. What it is good as is for a stylish box to sit in the living room with a flat screen etc so that someone can do some light surfing and letter writing. I guess it's the Apple equivlient of a ZX spectrum..

You're dreaming if you think it's a low powered machine, it isn't that far off of my PowerBook really and will more than handle what most users will throw at it.

The main reason the Mac mini exists is for 'switching'. Simply get a KVM and have a tiny little Mac sitting on top of your PC case, wham, switch between windows and Macintosh.
Ok, so you could use it as a media center, but it's not geared up for that really, as said it's mainly to tempt people away from PC's or so they'll use both platforms.
