Choices..

ACPI Multiprocessor PC
ACPI Uniprocessor PC
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC
Compaq SystemPro Multiprocessor PC or 100% Compatible
MPS Uniprocessor PC
MPS Multiprocessor PC
Standard PC
Standard PC with C-Step i486
Other

Pc is a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop (single pentium 4 2.4Ghz)

New install of Win XP from disc.
I asked to manually determine the type of pc as I know it sometimes gets it wrong (well it did with my desktop a while ago anyway)

try a standard install first. Pointless trying to do a custom one, if the standard one works. You are just creating more work for yourself, and the more input a human has the more chance something wont be quite right.

I dont mind more work, just want the correct setup to begin with.

I didnt mean a standard PC selection, I meant accept the defaults for the initial installation and see if that works first.

and say look down to the red writing..

This is the reason I wanted to choose my own..
