I have NIS 2004 and it does not rescan files moving around the hard drives. I have installed NIS on a number of PC's and agree it can be slow on startup if the PC is of a low spec. You should not even notice it installed if you have a pc of decent spec and it is running correctly.
Consider having a look at the PC before you jump ship.

I tried McAffee, I may not have set it up correctly, but just didn't like the way it didn't seem to fully integrate with the Windows user accounts I had set-up. Seemed to prompt each time for the admin user details...
So I'm running NIS again - binned McAffee.

I use McAfee - which I've never had a problem with - at home or work. Kaspersky is picking up a lot of awards at the moment though. The lowest rating one at the moment seems to be Panda.

Norton Internet Security - pah! I'd rather have a virus than have that installed...
Should be renamed as "Norton Computer Crippler".

this month in pc pro there is a good feature on this. Interestingly NIS gets a good write up. F-secure gets the best review as a combined package and there is also reviews of dedicated firewalls, virus checkers etc
