Hello Mr Wagon. - long time no see,

I run http://www.xtr2.net/ with SNTIZ forums...runs on IIS with SQL Server backend (or access if you dare). oh gawd - hope this isn't seen as an advert - its a none profit site - simon good buddy

http://forum.snitz.com/

It is packed with features - but needs effort to make it look as pretty as vbulletin.

My buddy runs http://www.passatowners.com with it - and I've heard a large subaru bulletin board uses it

Ian

Haven't looked for a while but doesn't Demon only allow you to run their own CGI's?

(assuming we're talking about homepage stuff not something you've paid for...)

Otherwise need to know supported databases, does it run ASP, PHP ColdFusion etc etc

You can get your site hosted for you for very little. Jim pays not very much to have that passat site hosted - pop a message on the forum and I'm he'll give you some info.

Depends how big your target audience is I guess.

OK - thanks so far

I've identified a suitable product (free ) & have got hold of it.

I have a "business" Demon account and according to them I can run forums NP 'cos of this - but they can't/won't help me as its technically unsupported and they don't know what I need to do.

Anyone have any experience of setting up a bbs on Demon servers?

This (at this stage) is just a limited run out for testing purposes and proof of concept. If sucessful, then it'll get beefed up & dealt with properly.

Confirmed that I can run stuff on my webspace, now trying to install Perl Modules remotely

Anyone shed any light on how this is done?

I've uploaded a *.tar.gz file (*=module concerned) to the right directory. Now I have to run a script to intall it.

Er - how please?

Forget Demon for this exercise

Although I can run scripts, can't load modules & they're not prepared to load 'em for me

Thanks there m8. I have access via Telnet but the shell does not allow loading of modules and has a reduced command-set.

What are the requirements of the software first of all? Most BBS software nowadays requires the use of an SQL backend. If your software requires this then you need to make sure Demon provide a MySQL server for you to connect to. If they don't then you will need to find one that uses its own database files.

p.s. You will need to untar the .tar.gz file using 'tar -xvzf file.tar.gz'

Can you not ask for admin to setup perl functionality?? i think your gonna need to if its as you say..I presume ur talkin some flavour of linux ? I wasnt sure before if you were talkin windows or linux

also what AJM said, you need pretty much full access to ur server to be able to set any of them up due to whats needed to run the bbs. If you have to rely on admin and they are not that good, then prepare for fun, and waiting!!

I guess I would see what access you can get to teh server and what functionality you can have, then check out if any bbs will fit into that spec, then make a decision from there, if you really want a bbs perhaps you need to upgrade or change ur hosting..
