I am attempting to set up a socks proxy server on one of our winxp machines to route MSN connections through (Basically to log the packets from one of the other machines on the network when using MSN) so i thought setting up a socks proxy and running the connection through that would be the best way to get the desired effect. Now i ran a quick test on one of the other pc's just to see if the concept works and it does, just fine. So i installed exactly the same software and configured it in the same way but msn just will not connect through it.. as far as i can tell everything is exactly the same but its got me puzzled.
Can anyone offer me any suggestions or even a better way to achieve this?
Cheers
Dave

Lemme get this straight.... so you installed the proxy on machine A and ran msn on machine B connecting via machine A and it worked. Then you installed the proxy on machine C and tried to run MSN through it from machine B and it didn't work?

something MUST be different then!
Is machine C on the same part of the network as A? No additional routers to go through from the client on B?
You did point msn at the new IP address for the proxy? (yeah obvious I know! )
Anything weird running on C like firewall software? XP firewall enabled on network connection?

This is whats puzzling me, the only notable difference is that the machine (well the desired machine) with the proxy on it has a PCMCIA nic rather than a pci one.
And yes i changed the ip

does the proxy software show any connection attempts from the client machine or any other errors etc? e.g. in the logs
can you telnet to the proxy port?

It does indeed, directly linked to the router and runs msn ok on its own. It seems to be some sort of issue between the machine running msn and the proxy machine as when i tested it on the other pc as soon as the connection was started it was logged on screen to confirm the connections, just cant work it out!
