Wireless LAN peeps...
#1
Hoping someone can help quickly . Trying to set up a wireless LAN or if anyone could reccomend anything else.
Using a BT Voyager 2000 Wireless ADSL modem to connect to adsl.
I then have a -
desktop machine 1 (wireless) (xp pro)
desktop machine connected (wireless)(xp home)and
Laptop connected (wireless) (xp pro)
All machines can access internet etc.. do normal stuff.
But what i want is for each machine to see each other a la LAN / Network. Trouble is neither machine can see each other so i cant share files or printer etc.. Firewall is off , sharing is on , also ping the router (that works) ping'd each machine and im getting request timed out. All machines have individual IP adds , able to ping the router.
Can anyone assist or possibly offer some tips / direction . Ive heard this is possibly a prob with router as other people have been having problems with this too.
Thanks .

Brett,
Are you using the router as a DHCP server or do you have static IP addresses? Make sure all your IP's are in the same range, and on the same subnet. Also check that all PC's are in the same work group. Make sure the XP firewall is turned off (under advanced TCP/IP properties I think?) as I had troubles with this not letting me see other PC's in the workgroup (sorted using zone alarm).
Also is the modem a modem/router or just a modem? If it's just a modem you may have to set the wireless network up as a peer to peer rather than using an access point.

Hi,
I've got 3 machines wired up, 2 wired and one wireless off a Netgear Modem/Router/firewall/wireless box ( sounds the same as yours).
The only thing I made sure of was that all the machines were running Netbeui.
:-)

Netbeui isn't installed by default under Windows XP.You need to add it manually. To do this:
Open the following folder in the Windows XP CD: ValueAdd\Msft\Net\Netbeui.
Copy nbf.sys into the %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\directory.
Copy netnbf.inf into the %SYSTEMROOT%\INF\ directory.
Open network connection properties and click the "Install..." button to add the NetBEUI protocol.
You should be able to get your network up and running with TCP/IP but netbeui is the fallback position I guess.I assume you have file sharing enabled on each machine? (You may need to create an lmhost file on each machine so that the machines can resolve each others netbios names if it's to stand any chance of workin using TCP/IP!!)
The problem you're havin sounds to me like a name resolution problem.....
Good luck
Nick

I'm no expert but the same thing happens with mine and reading the netgear site it mentions it is to do with the securit, using WEP.
If Wep is enabled, (which it better be unless you live a very solitary life ) it is meant to prevent people seeing what is on your networks.
There is a workround (though it doesn't work for me yet)

Sorry no clicky.
Might help?
