I've sold a customer a Digital Copier which they require connecting to "a" PC NOT to a network. The equipment is refurbished, about 2 years old but unfortunatley the original drivers are no longer available.
They are download able from the Ricoh website, but here is my aggro!!!
1) The customer does NOT have internet/e-mail access so cannot download the driver themselves into the building
2) They do not have CD drives
3) The driver is 1.85Mb so won't fit on a Floppy
How do I get a 1.85mb print driver from my pc to theirs? It's amazing I suppose but a few years ago, companies were being penalised for getting too far ahead of themselves, i.e no one else had the technology to enable them to share the benefits, in this case though I feel like I can't help these folk because they don't have an internet connection (Don't ask ) Using a good ole floppy just ain't gonna help this time
Could I condense the file at all, somehow? Can you e-mail software?
None of this would have happened if it had just fitted onto the bloody floppy disc. OH NO!!! You techies just had to put an extra little summat in there for uncle Mikey <Tee Hee, let's make it really hard for someone without internet access, Ha this'll show 'em >
Mikey <Takes a drag of his ***, puts his hand in his pocket and looks up. He wonders if anything in the land of IT is straight forward>

Get them to write their own drivers, bloody cheapskates
Span across floppies would work or myabe just stick it on a USB key for them. Mind you USB might not be available.
Cheers

You could buy an iomega zip drive, they are fairly cheap(under a £100 for a drive with some media i think)they are dead easy to set up and use and they have various different capacities that will easily do the job. If you would like more details have a look here www.iomega.com.

How can you e-mail the file to them if the customer does not have Internet/e-mail access...
Winzip disk spanning is the way to go (if normal zipping does not compress enough).

Jon,
Why spend £100 on a Zip Drive, when a CD ROM drive can be had for £20-30!
Mikey,
Use Winzip, when you are zipping specify that you want the file saved to the a: drive and it will span as disks that are needed. I've zipped up 10Mb of stuff like that before! It's a pain but sometimes the only way it can be done!

What the hell sort of 2 bit, tin pot company uses computers with no CDRom drives, no email or Internet access?
How the **** do they install or upgrade anything......
Hope you downloaded the DOS 3.0 printer driver on 5 1/4 floppies for them......LOL... their IBM XT 8Mhz PC is just begging for that new Printer, scanner, copier moment.....LOL
Sheesh - tell them to get real... (and a new PC)

Hiya Hobo, I agree mate, however it's these companies that have helped me grow the business. What you do is you have about 2% of your customer base in this league. We call them HillBilly prospects and what you do is you put up with the aggro, sell them anything that is digital and then educate them using your equipment. After about 2 years, they do it properly, THAT's where the money is.
Someone has to teach these people the principals of a Digital Copier/Scanner/Fax etc, once they have the principals licked, THEN they come to you IT people to be taught how.
I don't really need to know how (and don't in most cases. Easy Hanslow ) just that it does. It's enough to sell the concept.
Mikey <Remembers that there were a few terminals around with DOS type programmes (Green writing on Black screens) and dot matrix printers>

Did you sort it in the end then? ( wot no sarcasm from me????? )
If you need to....I might have a parallel port zip drive you can borrow if you really can't master the rocket science task of zipping across disks ( oops, sarcasm crept in )
