You appear not to have either the operating system or speed to match your new found internet speeds....
Im guessing here (just trying to be kind) but I reckon you have a pretty slow pc overall. You should invest in an upgrade to match your expectations.

Well not quite but the result is the same.
I've got a 550Mhz machine with 120M Ram (pathetic, I know) and I just got fed up with my puny 38kbps BT connection. BT added insult to injury by constricting this further or cutting me off, when I tried to download anything decently large (operation boaconstrictor IIRC). So I got the only broadband system available to me (Extreme Pipex) and the speed was massivley increased
But, with my new found downloading abilities I decided to update what I could on my machine with the patches available. These all downloaded and installed with lightning speed (MS updates, Norton, various drivers etc). The end effect though is that my machine has almost ground to a halt and if I interogate the system it says that I've only got 50% resources free with no applications open
So what is going on? How do I find out what has clogged my machine up?
I have defragged the hard drive with a small improvement and I am planning a new machine soon.

Memory is as cheap as chips. Buy some more!!
If you are runnning w2k or XP you will see dramatic improvement by adding 256MB. Should be only £20 or £30. If you can afford it, get 512MB. I have sam as you PIII 550 but with 512MB ram on w2k. Whistles along just fine on most apps.
If you are using anything below w2k, then you should seriously consider upgrading. Installing large amounts of memory, over 128MB, do not add performance gain on W98 or W95.

What I don't understand is why the machine has slowed when the connection speed has increased?
Also, I'm trying to avoid problems with a new machine so if I can understand why this one has slowed then I can not make the same mistakes, see?

If it's USB then it can take up to 30% of the systems resources to run it. If possible switch to ethernet and this should solve the issue.
Try checking system resources > right click my computer > properties > performance tab.
System resources should be above 80% preferably near 90%.
If it's lower then some can be freed up (let us know and we'll tell you how)
