pc keeps restarting
#1
I've just bought a geforcefx 5900ultra, now when i'm running a game although it runs about 10 times faster than it used to, my pc now restarts itself after a bit, it does the same when showing the demos of vulcan etc. I have tried both the drivers on the cd, and the newest ones from nvidia, but i still get the same problem. Now i didnt expect this from such a top piece of kit, I thought it might be overheating, but it runs at under 50 degrees C most of the time in windows, and the default alert temp is 140, and for some reason i doubt it gets so hot so quick, considering i touch it after and it seems fine. has anybody else had this? or does anyone know what to do to cure this?

I don't know TBH. Looks like the bigest is a 550w for £34
http://www.starcomputers.co.uk/details/550w-psu.htm
The system seems well up to the job though, the only other thing would be the power supply from the wall but I'm guessing if it was fine before, it should be fine now.
Might be worth trying to get hold of that voltage app from framegrabber ppl

I haven't come across this problem recently, but a when the early GeForce cards came out certain motherboards were not able to maintain the current required when the graphics card was running at full power. Therefore it maybe the motherboard or power supply at fault.
I was able to diagnose this problem by using a utility supplied by the framegrabber manufacturer to display the supply voltage to the graphics card. When running Quake 3 in a window I found that the voltage dropped just before the PC crashed/rebooted.
Good luck.

With reading Steve's answer I was just about to say power supply aswell. What motherboard and processor are you running? It might be as simple as going out and getting a 330w power supply...

well i'm running a 2.66ghz P4 533fsb, with the Intel 845PESV board, running under a (claimed) 400W powersupply. its a 4x AGP.
I may be short of power though as you say. Because i am powering the geforce, an audigy 2 platinum eX, CDRW, DVD, IDE hard drive, SATA HD, 2 fans running off the motherboard (not including the cpu fan), and then 2 fans running off the power supply...

About 30BHP and a set of ear defenders
Sorry....
You may want to consider d/l the latest drivers though.
And if you're on 2000/XP have a look in the System event log to see if anything has been logged to that giving some sort of explanation.

Best way to find out is unplug an unnecessary devices and try the game again, this will rule out the power question. 400w should be more than enough.
I can't find any reboot problems related to the card you've got so I guess the next step would be MB BIOS/memory - see below

ok thanks for your help, i will try all of the stated, and will let you know how i get on, i think i'll remove some of the fans and the audigy card to see if that helps in terms of power. i am starting to think it may be due to the power tho, because my psu gives me 4 4pin power cables, and i'm running 8 devices which require a 4 pin power supply, using splitters and such. so this may be the problem. i am going to try updating my bios also. Thank you kindly for your help, you have obviously done some research on my behalf.
