Just checking all the levels under the bonnet of my sexy new scoob type R and noticed there is a dipstick, a funny shaped bugger, under the intercooler...what's that for?

Checked it anyway and it's a mm under full level, so that seems ok.

any ideas?

Matt

In a moment of sheer genius, Subaru saw fit that you should
top it up through the dipstick hole

'Using a funnel and a legth of flexible hose' IIRC.

its a damn site easier to top up than any other gearbox i have come accross in 20 years of driving. Most cars you have to crawl under the car and remove a filler plug then squeeze a bottle until it dribbles out the fill plug. Most cars dont have a gearbox dipstic either.

People give Subaru designs a hard time, even when they get it right!

Gear box filler cap inside the cabin - under a little hatch just behind or in front of the gear shifter would be my idea. A nice billet ali filler cap to boot too!

Not claiming to be a genius !!!!

First thought....Why didn't they just make the steel tube
and dipstick longer so that it was higher up and easy to get
to just by use of a funnel....

I was just expressing an opinion...chill out!

it will be that size, length for production line instalation reasons. Considering you only need to fill these at a major service unless you have a bad leak which should be repaired, having a dipstick that is easy to use when you consider how tightly packed an Impreza engine bay is, is a pretty good feat IMHO.

Dont spill any oil in your cabin, gearbox oil stinks.

Better designed gear box oil bottles would naturally follow such a an idea, however being Subaru I would hazard a guess would come at a premium!!
