Nothing put me off just replacing the bottom end as such but..............................

I put in a 'reconditioned' ebay engine that lasted a week.

Then a used bottom end that I bought from someone on here.

Then removed it to sort out a couple of oil leaks.

Then killed that one with a sustained high RPM / high speed run.

Currently have the WR1 bottom end assembled with V5 STi heads sat on the bench waiting for me to buy a new turbo and refit everything into the car.

My TD05 20G arrived today from Andy Forrest !

I haven't been working on the car due to the weather.

I popped over to collect some tools a couple of weeks ago and it was so cold in the garage that my hand stuck to the breaker bar !

I have also been considering doing a parellel fuel rail mod before I refit the engine ?

That would make a nice edition to the engine bay as well, ive done mine and used some billet ends so i could use the existing rails and also used the goodridge braided hoses with -6 ends.

TV, API stock a pre-fabbed parallel rails/hoses/-AN fittings set-up for £300 +vat. I have one on my car

You'll need to add a 3-port FPR (2 inputs; one for each rail. And a return to the tank). Plus it obviously has the 1/8" NPT port so as to temp. to fit a 100psi/7bar gauge for setting pressure (get the glycerine filled type).

I have the 3-port "mini" Fuelab FPR on mine (the best lol ).

This is a budget project !

Bear in mind that I am originally from Yorkshire.

£300 for fuel rails !

Not in my lifetime !

Looking at the DIY method using two passenger side rails and an aftermarket FPR with gauge and 'soft' lines using fuel injection hose.

Not as pretty I agree but does the job according to the guys on NASIOC and I already have at least one spare set of fuel rails that I could use !

lol

Yeah, you can easily make a budget set up using OEM rails and std fuel hose...

All the bits I bought on ebay have arrived, fuel pressure regulator, fuel hose clips, brass Y adaptors, injector hose and pipe flaring tool.

I just need to be in a fit state to do some work, I have been ill with a chest infection all week !

You could use some of the crap I'm coughing up as an alternative to Threebond !

I have been giving the fuel rail question a coat of looking at using the spare set of fuel rails that happened to be sat in the garage at home.

Opinions seem divided but people claim that using equal lengths of pipework for the supply and return runs is vital, suggested length of 30cm from the Y-pieces (located under the centre of the inlet manifold) to each fuel rail.

I was trying to use the fuel rails without having to cut the attached pipework.

I measured the length of 'hard' pipe attached to the rear end of the drivers side rail and got a measurement of 47.5cm (because of all the twists and turns) and it would still need about 20cm of 'soft' pipe to get to the Y-piece !

Clearly having equal runs of 67.5 cm is not the future !

It looks like some cutting will be in order after all !

Now, just got to find that tube cutter I have somewhere..........................

Why do I get these ideas in my brain ?

I wouldn't worry about having every section being the same length.

It's simply sufficient to just have the 2 dedicated separate feeds into each banks' rail. The pressure is est. ever so quickly between the fuel pump and FPR, so the "every section must be the same length" argument is something not worth bothering with.

+1 John once pressure is attained and as mentioned you have 2 dedicated feeds then it doesn't matter whether you have one longer than another.

You'd have to be OCD to worry about the pressure loss in pipes of that diameter, unless running methanol at >750 bhp.

IMHO

OCD ?

Me ?

(Walks round in a circle 3 times, turns the light on and off at 3 second intervals 3 times..........)

Never !

I managed to find my tube cutter and have 'pruned' the hard pipes to a more acceptable length, just need to tidy up the ends and flare them.

Finally made it to the garage today after a long absence.

Removed the standard fuel rails without removing the inlet manifold, which I thought was a result.

I also added some rubber trim between the front mount and the thin edge of the lower panel, don't want it wearing holes in the intercooler !

I also left the modified fuel rails at home somehow and didn't really fancy another 30 mile round trip to get them, just have to fit them next time.

Fuel rail day !

Managed to fit my 'butchered' original rails and get the fuel feed lines in place.

I had to do a substantial amount of cutting on the drivers side 'green bracket of death' to get it to clear my new routing of the fuel line.

I managed to leave the angle grinder at home so had to do the cutting with a hacksaw !

Zoiks !

I 'don't do' non-power tools !

I would appreciate some ideas on where to fit the FPR, passenger side of the inlet manifold looked good but then remembered that the intercooler pipework is routed that way ?

Mine is tucked right in the corner just above the chassis rail by the strut turret up against the bulkhead.

Very hard to photograph...

Cheers Dunx !

I did consider fabricating a bracket to fit around the strut brace to attach the FPR, anybody got any input ?

currently have one fitted to pitch stop mount and noise comes through the bulk head from injectors / fpr.. may do the same on strut brace..

I prefer mounting it to inlet manifold for this reason and will be relocating mine there when I get time.. also prefer to mount it away from the turbo.

Cheers Simon.

It is a bit of a pain as until the engine is back in I won't know how much space I will have to play with.

I have to find a home for the oil catch can and 25 row Mocal oil cooler and avoid the pipe work from the FMIC as well.

Finished the fuel rails today and had a go at fitting the new turbo.

What a pain in the a**e !

My silicone inlet pipe just does not seem to be in the right place to mate up properly, it was a pain last time.

I decided to come home and calm down before I smashed something in a fit of temper.

Maybe next weekend ?

Is it a cheapo silicone, where the pattern might be a bit dodgy?

Why not fit the OEM item? Only gets restrictive from about 400bhp I believe...

It is an ebay special !

I don't want to remove the inlet manifold again though so will have to persevere with it.

Yep. Viper and Samco are good ones. Both have the reinforcing steel bands. Viper about 75% the price of the Samco.

Japspeed have 6 ply and is reinforced with steel, still is good as Samco,Viper,SFS.
Depends on your needs i would say,but sometimes these brands(Samco,Viper) are just overpriced due one reason, because is Samco,Viper,SFS..
