Help !!! Killed the Scoob !

Not had chance to look at it today, helping out a friend with his new gym.
I am open to advice people ?
Just to re-cap, it is a WR1 bottom end (equivalent to STi 9 widetrack blobeye ?) with STi 5 heads.
When we took the car out it threw up a fault code (misfire on cylinder 1) then almost straight away threw codes for misfire on the other cylinders ?
Simon said initially it seemed like it might be running on 3 cylinders but then seemed to be running on 4.
He made a call and the suggested possible causes were:
1. Wrong crank / camshaft sprocket (have I fitted a classic sprocket on my newage block ?)
The only picture from the engine build shows a newage sprocket but this was before the cambelt and pulleys were fitted so there is a possibility I may have accidently swapped it for a classic one.
2. Crankshaft sensor faulty or the correct sprocket fitted but teeth damaged ?
3. Camshaft pulleys ? I think I fitted the ones that came with the heads, three plastic pulleys and one metal, as far as I know V5 onwards use the same pulleys as newage WRX anyway ? I have two spare full sets of pulleys if need be ?
4. Camshaft position sensor faulty or wrong / damaged marks on the metal pulley ?
I think I have spare sensors for both, I have done a bit of research and it seems that they are the same on late classics / newage WRX ?
I have read a few threads saying that the gearbox neutral position sensor can throw up spurious misfire codes as well but wasn't something that Simons source mentioned, is it worth checking ?
I am looking for some input on the most likely possibility, in an ideal world I would like to avoid cambelt removal and refitting with the engine in the car (I know, I know !)
I always find it easier to line everything up with the engine sat on the work bench !
All suggestions gratefully received (apart from the suggestions to burn it, call an exorcist, drop it out of a Hercules transport plane, get Godzilla to sit on it, etc)

I was sure the crank wheels are different (classic to newage) but wasnt sure about cam wheels hence my phonecall
the other option is a damaged cam or crank wheel
neutral position sensor would give the codes but it wouldnt drive like it was on three..
it occasionally sounded like it was on 4 but not a decent smooth 4.. but clearly had the powr of 3.. hence my suspicious of a crank wheel issue.

Having had the bottom end go on my blobeye STi about four months ago, I fully sympathise with your plight.
My car almost ended up in the hands of the Heathrow Engine Centre (probably the worst reconditioner in the UK - if you know of them you'll know that is no exaggeration). It was on a truck to them when I found out who they were (Google it if you've never heard of them, it's gobsmacking stuff). I was so shocked by the whole experience it took me months of asking about before I dared do anything with the car again.
In the end, Scoobyspares in Fleetwood put a much younger engine in from another car that they were breaking and seem to have done a great job for a fair price. The car has run almost flawlessly for three weeks since they fixed it, which only took 4 days.
The figures I was quoted by my local Subaru dealers were ridiculous. The worst being £7000 for just a short engine. The whole experience really has been traumatic (my wife just doesn't understand why I was so upset about it) but it seems to be over.
I hope you see the light at the end of the tunnel soon.

I should have paid someone to sort it out in the first place but decided to give it a go myself.
I don't think the current problem is anything too serious but I was all keyed up for the remap and MOT so it was a massive letdown when Simon discovered that I have some issues (with the car that is !)
I already knew that 'I' had some issues !

3k seems optimistic! admittedly my 05 wrx bottom end was completely knackered but My bill came out at 7k!!! I had to have a whole new bottom end and the only 'upgrade' was a set of cosworth pistons.... the rest was just new standard components from subaru. When you get in there you could find all sorts, I needed a new clutch, fly wheel, metal filings were found in the oil from the detonation so all new oil lines and coolers, valve seats scratched up so had to be recut and bedded in!! Rebuilds are definitely the safe option but are very costly!!!

I have swapped the cam and crank sensors today, cleared any fault codes and restarted the car.
Left it running on tickover for a couple of minutes but then CEL came on (flashing)
Read the fault codes and had two 'pending' codes both for misfire so doesn't look as though the sensors are the problem.
I am going to have to remove some bits to get to the cam pulley and crank sprocket and recheck the timing belt was fitted correctly.............
Bummer !
'Mysterious garage fire' springs to mind !
Left it running on tickover for a couple of minutes but then CEL came on (flashing)

I drove it 50 miles back from the seller, mostly on motorways and it seems fine ?
Has the 4 pot front brakes, working air con, clutch feels good, no rust............
It does need the centre section of the exhaust replaced but a stainless one came with it and I need to fit the new Knock sensor that was also supplied.
MOT until April, decent (budget) tyres, can't complain at this price !

Yes !
When I get fed up of one, I can move over to the other !

Gave it a wash and vac today, painted the alloys satin black and gave the front calipers a coat of paint !
Bought a new CD player as well but need to order an adaptor lead before I fit it.
This is much more fun than trouble shooting 'Christine'
