I haven't measured the big end clearances yet I shall be doing that in the next couple of days.

Ring gap wise I've taken this from the workshop manual:

The builds looking good mate your nearly there....I would love to find out how the engine engineers actually peg these blocks i.e are they welded and what type of weld and how they are able to take account of the various expanding metals???

The short motor is almost built. Just oil pump, water pump and front and rear crank seals to install and its finished.

The one thing I thought was going to be a complete ballache turned out to be an absolute doddle. The gudgeon pins and Cosworth Clips. Much to my surpise I didn't have to fight to get the pins through like I normally do and the C-clips just clicked into place with some precision screwdriver usage.

 

Are you building that up in the kitchen ?

What clearnces did you get with the main bearing and bigend bearings

 

Also didyou use any protection lube on your bearings, Its just Matt at rcm said oil will be just fine.

 

Big ends were all between 0.025 and 0.038 although I had one which was between 0.038 and 0.050 but it was nearer to 0.038 so I wasn't too concerned.

Mains were ok too can't remember the exact figures but they were all within specified figures.

To be fair subaru OEM cranks are pretty good for journal size consistency.

It's the aftermarket ones such as Arrow etc that need to be checked more carefully.

As for assembly lube, this is the first time I've used it. I used it on all the crank and rod bearings which all got a good dose of the stuff but I stayed with good old fashioned motor oil for the pistons, rings and bores.

If Matt says oil is good enough then I'd use that. I'd just seen others using it and thought I'd give it a try.

Back to the rest of the car.

I've been working outside in the freezing cold today. I've needed to get the car back on its wheels as I am having my garage knocked down and a new one built so I will need to move the Impreza out of the way.

So I needed to put the front suspension and steering components on then the brakes and finally the wheels. So for the first time in a good few months the is without axle stands and sits on its wheels.

Currently not alot....got my rad,fmic,boost pipe,inlet manifold all coated with "special coating".

Mainly down to me not having time to strip it until a month ago. 4 dropped liners, block is going off to rcms for machining early in the new year. Will get machined for 14mm headstuds whilst there.

January is a no go month for me, due to tax returns, so told Steve end of Feb rather than fail to deliver on a promise.
