DIY 550bhp 2.5 STI V3 Type R

I thought it was high time I told you good folks what I've been upto over the last few months. The car itself was an accident damaged shell. I bought the shell for £1000. It has also escaped being a Cat D for some reason according to the recent HPI check I've made. Mind you that's irrelivant as I won't be selling it

It was a complete car minus the engine, Ecu front brakes and seats.

The bonus was that the shell had Tein Coilovers, Whiteline 22mm anti Roll bars and Whiteline solid drop links.

For £1000 I thought it was an absolute bargain.

I have and shall be continuing to do all the work on this car myself with 1 exception the mapping.

I've been working on the car since its purchase and have bought parts as and when I have been able to afford them. Most of them have been sourced second hand via members on here and via some ebay purchases.

So another project begins.

These were the pictures sent to me before I bought the car.

Pics of the original Damage

http://www.scoob.co.uk/typer/6.jpg

I decided that I should be able to repair it so I bought the car.

Here it is on day of collection.

The damaged panels were removed using a spot weld drill and were replaced.
They were then primed up.

http://www.scoob.co.uk/typer/enginebayprimed.jpg

I then painted the repair with base coat and then lacquer.

http://www.scoob.co.uk/typer/enginebaypainted.jpg

http://www.scoob.co.uk/typer/enginebaypainted3.jpg

http://www.scoob.co.uk/typer/enginebaypainted4.jpg

I didn't like the colour match so I decided to do the whole car which in my garage being a first time painter was a mistake.

It was then through a friend that I met a painter who was just starting out on his own and said if I'd help he'd paint the car for free. I jumped at the chance.

As the car was without engine and my paint work was rubbish I also decided I'd do a full colour change to something a bit diferent.

dazdavies 24 October 2008 12:25 AM

So the proper paint job begins.

First up was the engine bay.

Then the various other bits and pieces.

dazdavies 24 October 2008 12:31 AM

Then work started on the shell itself.

Whilst I was at this I decided to have a go at refurbing my wheels.

These were in a bad way but a little hard work and I am well pleased with how they turned out.

Hi Mate,

Yeah I'm alot further on. I'm just writing it up as I've never written it on here it was all on 22b. I'm bringing it upto date on here that's all :) Then I'll update both concurrently

dazdavies 24 October 2008 01:15 AM

So with the bodywork 95% completed it was time to start gathering parts.

I managed to get a 2.5 Crank, some Roger Clark / Arrow WRC Rods and some RCMS / Omega Pistons 2.5L Low compression pistons and some Kent Adjustible Vernier Cam pulleys.

I've also had a 2.0L Closed Deck Block sitting in my garage that I bought for £50 a couple of years back. I decided to be a bit different and get that bored and sleeved to 2.5. So in went some top hat liners.

banny sti 24 October 2008 10:31 AM

Looking good Daz, just picked up a gt35/42r with 0.82 housing for the 2.5 car should be fitted in the next few weeks.

Banny

dazdavies 24 October 2008 10:41 AM

I'm considering one of those too, would be interested to know what it's like.
I presume this is Steven's old one?

I'd like to know what it spools up like and when full boost is achieved by etc.

Would be grateful if you could keep me posted mate.

banny sti 24 October 2008 10:51 AM

It is from Mark's car, getting the heads ported and possibly fitting some adjustable pulleys but retaining the standard valvetrain for the moment.

Have you decided what ecu you will be running? Going to run a solaris on mine now. As soon as its mapped will let you know what it is like and how it drives.

Banny

dazdavies 24 October 2008 11:06 AM

Parallel existance me thinks.

STI V5 valve train only difference is uprated valve springs. I've already got some adjustible verniers.

I was looking at the Simtek but have decided on the Solaris purely as its a far more advanced bit of kit and I like what it can offer.

You're not far from me so I might have to get you to take me out in it when its done :D

New_scooby_04 24 October 2008 11:42 AM

You don't do things in half measures do you Daz! :D

Good luck with it; looking forward to reading more!.

Nice one Daz...

Looking forward to reading the rest as it is posted.

This is the sort of thread that makes SN worthwhile.

frayz 24 October 2008 03:21 PM

Watching with interest Daz :D

Fai17 24 October 2008 03:42 PM

Looking great and would love to see it going sometimes.

172sport 24 October 2008 05:18 PM

There's always one isn't there:rolleyes:

Rossco_ 24 October 2008 06:43 PM

Make it two, it does look like a sweet project, dont get me wrong but im also not a fan of the colour

stoneface 24 October 2008 06:50 PM

Whats the colour code Daz?

dazdavies 24 October 2008 07:39 PM

The mate who's spray shop it was had a mixing scheme. We were pissed up one night and started making colours. This is what we came up with. We made 5 litres of it. It's a one off. I only have a litre left which is being saved if any touch ups are needed.

DB07P1 24 October 2008 08:54 PM

interesting write up mate...looking forward to the next batch of updates :)

psigeek 24 October 2008 08:58 PM

I'll be following this one. I like the new colour, just a little different which is great.

dazdavies 25 October 2008 07:58 PM

OK then, a few pics of the engine build.

Block half with o-rings in place.

http://www.scoob.co.uk/typer/enginebuild/1.jpg

ACL race bearings in place.

http://www.scoob.co.uk/typer/engineb...clbearings.jpg

Rods and crank placed in the block.

http://www.scoob.co.uk/typer/engineb...dsandcrank.jpg

Built short block minus pistons

http://www.scoob.co.uk/typer/engineb...esspistons.jpg

Then it was time to put the Pistons in the block.

http://www.scoob.co.uk/typer/engineb...compressor.jpg

http://www.scoob.co.uk/typer/engineb...toninblock.jpg

Short block built with ARP head studs in place
http://www.scoob.co.uk/typer/engineb...blockbuilt.jpg

A thicker head gasket is used to make sure the 2.5 bore size and the sti 5 2.0L head combo produce the correct compression ratio. I've used a 1.6mm thick gasket instead of the factory 0.7mm.
