widest width tyre
there seems to be a difference in opinions on what the maximum tyre width is that can be fitted to a 7.5j rim.i have some 235/40/17 toyo r888's and want to know whether they will be ok on a 7.5" rim.they will just be used for track.can anyone please advise as to whether they will be ok.thanks.

On Toyo website is recommended size 8J as minimal
http://www.toyo.co.uk/tire/pattern/proxes-r888

it does say on the toyo site that 235/45/17 will be ok with 7.5" rim but not a 235/40/17.the problem i have is,i have bought a set of wheels which were being sold as an 8" rim.when they have turned up they are a 7.5" rim.i already have the tyres ready to go on them and they wheels are really light which i want.the seller has said he will refund the money back but i was thinking that if the tyres would be safe on the rim then i will keep them.
Problem is with R888 they have stiff sidewall

Yeah.there et 48.i rang toyo this morning and they said not to fit them.but tbh he was only goin by what it said on there website.i then rang somewere that preps cars for track use and he seems to think they will be ok.he said the main worry will be getting the tyre on and off the rim.but if i use a good tyre fitter then there shouldnt be too much of a problem.im goin to try them out and see how it goes.if it dont feel right on track i'll just use them on the quarter mile.
