I've got a standard MY01 WRX with 225/45 x 17's on the standard wheels.

I've been thinking of getting some new wheels and 18" ones are an obvious answer, but I've been wondering whether 19's will be o.k.?

Part of the reason for considering bigger wheels is the 17's look a little small in the quite large arches of the new model.

If I go for the 19's will they fit o.k? I haven't mod'ed the brakes in any way.

If I increase the overall diameter (presumably you can't get a lower profile than 40's?) what effect is it likely to have on speedo readings? I don't want to be driving along at what I think are legal-ish speeds and get nicked!!!!!

Try giving TSL a ring. They can probably do you a good deal on a set of 19" wheels. Think they are running 19's on there own car.

You can get much lower profiles than 40's. Sammyh is running his on 35's to keep the overall diameter much the same as the standard tyres. Hence, you won't need to worry about your speedo misreading! (Damn - another excuse for being caught speeding goes out of the window - your wife will kill you!)

The downside of 35's is (in theory) the deterioration in ride quality. However, I've not been in Sammyh's car, and anyway it is an STi and hence will be different to your MY01. TSL have fitted 19" wheels to a customers car, so they might be able to comment, but it is all subjective so I suggest you get a test drive.

Another slight downside is the effect on your brakes - they will look tiny inside a 19" wheel.

Tim,

I've got 18" wheels on my MY01 at the mo and I think that they are a good compromise. Ride quality actually improved over the standard setup due to better tyres (Toyos), I'd agree that your brakes will look tiny, but another consideration is that 17" to 19" is quite a jump in terms of unsprung weight, this will probably have a noticable effect upon your suspension performance and small bump sensitivity. The other point to consider is getting the right offsets to match your car. Reccommended offsets for MY01 are about ET54 and with my 18inchers I'm running ET48 which appears to be fine. I don't know what the 19" options are. I have to say though that the Diablos that TSL put on look pretty spanky!

You managed to talk your way into getting some time off for good behaviour to make the Surrey meet?

Cheers,

Simon

Cheers for your help chaps.

Tiggs - I won't get in trouble if my wife never finds out!!! I just have to work out how to convince her that my standard silver WRX wheels have magically changed to 18" Gold P1's!!!

Simon - Didn't make the meet , sorry. Not wife trouble (thank you Tiggs) but you e-mailed me back on my work e-mail and I'd shut down for the Bank Holiday...(some would say I've never opened up....) I'll try to get to the next one. You obviously know a lot of tecchy stuff......what's an ET54?

Duncan - I think you've done enough to put me off running 19"s. I don't want to mes about changing brakes and stuff at the moment, and the ride is harsh enough on my 45's so I think I'll take the safe move to 18"s with 40 profile tyres.

I wasn't trying to put you off!

Simon

The 48mm offset has been recommended by Pete Croney as providing improved steering feel on the WRX. Also it is convenient as most aftermarket wheels don't come with offsets any greater than this.

Hi guys

19" Diablo's are an ET 52.. Scoob specific wheel.. just 2mm from the factory ideal..

plus their v. narrow width (7.5") is as per OE.. which means you can run a nice OE width 215 tyre too.. All these means no loss of manners..

Cheers

Trouser

... or of course.. slap Physics in the face and fit an 18" Forged wheel... 8 kilo's of unsprung weight less than your OE 17".... and nearly three and a half times stronger

The NSF frnt wheel in this shot was kerbed by Pops at over 70mph!!.. Typical.. !.. it spun up true after and just needed a repaint!!! .. AWESOME!!. Mind you at £323 plus Vat per corner you expect a little magic eh?!!

Are you sure about that, the last set of 19" Diablo's we sold were ET45?

PS what's a GC8 when one is at home? and why would it be a problem if an ET45 rubbed off on it?

Paul.

My mistake, the ones we have sold in the past have all been the ET52.

Hi Mike

for sure mate.. we had them cast...
(Not actually correct, they already existed as an export only wheel on that ET.)

Been running 19" 215x35 P7's for a few months and not had any issues with ride quality.

Go for the 19's or why not 20's ;D
