Default track day tyres

camskill seem to have a number of trackday tyres around the 100 quid mark, Federal and Hankook up to the yoko AD08s for 120 quid. Inclined to go with the yokos, but are these others ok or perhaps even better? This is for pure track use on a 97 type R.
cheers!

I'm running the ad08's and can't fault them (road and track)
Not tried the 888's so can't comment.

Are the AD08's better than the Toyo R1R's, only I can get 215/40/17 R1R's for £124 ea.

Ellie at AET wasn't overly impressed with the R1R VS the R888...

Yeah I know heat was an issue over the 888's as dedicated track/road tyres I was wondering about their direct road/track comparison in the Yoko range.

http://www.hankook.ie/tyres/rally-tarmac-z209/

If you can find a supplier, place near us supplies part worn tarmac rally tyres for £50 a corner, awesome grip and good life too, many people rate them better than 888's but as I have never run 888's I can comment but find these very good, I think brand new they are only £110 per corner

^ Very similar to the Dunlop CR311. November last year I had a quote for new 190/650R17 CR311 in X02 and X04 £49.00 + VAT each.

Wasn't sure of the exact 215/40/17 conversion but seemed damned cheap !

That is very cheap!! I might have to investigate those when my current set of track day tyres wear out although I'm running 18" wheels.

Funny how motorsport tyres have a slightly different size rating to everyone else!

Interested in this too - also have 18s and due to the issues in Japan the 888s aren't available for a while.... what else do people use?

I asked a local Rally team, but they sold them to a guy in Cyprus on there last visit, but this is the way to go imho. Im due another visit to see if they have anything

They run Two Hatch's and Two Fiesta's on both 17s and 18s.

For pure trackday use I'd say the Toyo 888 is the best alround choice but also consider the Silverstone FTZ-R see link
http://www.silverstonecompetitiontyr.../racetrack.htm
The Silverstone is available in 235/40/17 which works very well.
Used tarmac rally tryes are a great buy if you can get them, although lots of rally teams on a tight budget use Maxsport RB5s see link
http://www.maxsport.uk.com/acatalog/..._RB5_Tyre.html
Federal also have a new semi slick the S201 on the way which will be a control tyre for the Subaru cup series, I've no pricing for this but I'd expect it to be cheaper than then Toyo / Silverstone.see link
http://www.federaltire.com/en/html/p...pdline=5&ID=44
Dunlop used to do a great tyre the DZ03 I think this is now the DZ04, I used the DZ03 on my TVR and it was easily the equal of the 888, although I'm told it doesn't work so well on heavier saloon cars my TVR weighs 1000kgs so is much lighter than a Impreza but if you have a stripped out car it may be worth a look.
All in all any of the above will give great track performance but will be compromised for regular road use and also are generally only available through motorsport suplliers to be prepared to do some ringing about to get what your after, try Ears motorsport for good service and decent prices. Also ensure the tyres are DOT aproved if you want to use them on the road all the above are but some rally tarmac tyres arn't.

Most 'road' tyres are compromised for track use, the tread blocks generate to much heat and soon cause the grip to fall away and it doessn't seem to matter which make they are they all tend to suffer the same fate, however, one tyre that copes well with this is the Hankook RS-2, is seems to be able to maintain grip much better than other fully treaded tyres and with very stiff side walls is an excellent alternative to the semi slick if the car is also to be used on the road, (good price too)

For ultimate grip (at least in the dry) try to get hold of some full slicks ex BTCC ones come up quite often on ebay, just be careful with sizing they are very sensitive to rim width.

cheers guys they will be only used on the track tbh will be using diff wheels for road, was thinking 17s for the road and 16s for the track, im not interested in how the tyre/wheel fills out the arches , is anyone using 16s on the track, then again if im going to upgrade the brakes at some stage i guess it will need 17s to fit over them.

those maxsport are seriously cheap

I may be wrong here but I think the reason the Maxsports are so cheap is because they are basically remoulds, there are a few companies making cheap remould (now called re-treaded) tyres for rallying and autograss, ie Colway, although I believe the process is significantly improved these days so the nasty remoulds of old are long gone.

Re the 16 vs 17, I was told years ago by a instructor at a Porsche trackday that the Boxter handled and drove much better on the stock 16s than the optional 17/18s, although most people ordered the larger wheels simply on looks, so the 16s are probably slightly better, but I'd say on balance you'd be better with 17s, which have a greater choice of tyre and will allow brake upgrades when required.

was talking at work today about these max tyres, maybe its just me being older but just cant get the old remould crap out of my head, yet the guys were all for them especially if low budget rally teams are using them, tbh the amount of track days ill be doing this year it might just be worth grabbing a set and see what happens at that price.

I'm led to believe these are very high quaility and not to be confused with the dodgy remoulds of old, I'll deffo be trying a set on mine if only to save the expensive race rubber, plus they can be cut to produce a 'wet' although once cut they are no longer road legal.

I never use the remoulded rally tyres on my cars , and don't know anyone that does , the most popular tarmac tyres on the rallies I do are Dunlop , khumo or Hankooks , I am using the Hankooks at the moment , a very similar tyre in performance to the khumo's , but slightly harder so need a bit more warming up to perform to there best.

The best rally tyres are either Michelin or Pirelli , but are a lot more expensive

That's a good old thread revival, 12 months on.
