If you want grip get RE-070's in 225/45/17 as used on the STI, they fit O.K. but can tramline a bit on poor surfaces. But way better than T1R or S on a Scoob, IMHO. Obviously you'd need to do all four but they are way better...

If you can track them down then the best compromise that I've found between mileage, comfort & performance is the Michelin PS2 (not the later PS3). It is perhaps 95% on the wet roads and under braking but steering feel is sharp thanks to the stiff sidewalls and provide very good mid corner grip. They last a lot better than the equivelant Eagle Asym's & ContiSport3's although there are tyres such as the RE070 and Toy R1 which are significantly grippier, at the expense of wet performance, lifespan & comfort...basically they're track day tyres that can be used on the road rather than high performance road tyres.
Realistically the T1R is an old tyre and most of the new options, for example the Vredestien Ultrac Sessanta etc will eclipse it for mileage, fuel economy & grip. Have a look on Camskill and see what's on there to suit your budget, the performance options from the big manufacturers are all pretty good although I really can't rate the RE050A as the sidewalls are too soft, even on the Pole Position version.

but not from camskills. They seemed very expensive when I was looking for tyres compared to clickontyre.co.uk and elitedirect.com. Well for Vredesteins anyway.

I've been thinking about doing this. Silly question but can you tell they are bigger? From what I can see they are 9mm bigger in diameter over a 215, but wonder if that makes any difference in the real world.

Yes you can and I much prefer it. The spec C RA has 235s rather than the normal STI 225s which makes it look chunkier and more purposeful. Driving wise I cant tell any difference, in fact it drives better than the standard 215 RE50s, better grip, better handling (edge of grip feel), smoother ride, quieter. I also prefer the fact that the rubber protects the alloys more and the Vredesteins have an addition wire rim lip to give further protection.
When you consider these things and the fact that I bought them for £83 per tyre its pretty good value. Oh, and they also have a designer tread pattern which looks good designed by some Italian company I believe.

One other thing to mention which is important is to contact the insurance companies and make sure they are happy for you to put wider tyres on. I have modified alloys on so tyres are included in that but those that dont declare any wheel mods may find a company wont pay out if they havent told them about it. Usually they just want to know and dont actually increase the premium but worth asking before.

These stealth charges that are creeping in to everything these days dressed as 'administration' charges are becoming a rip off. What greed to charge people £25 to make an alteration to their policy.
Best thing is to phone them and see if they are at all bothered. They may not need to make any alterations at all anyway.

Tyres aren't generally fitted to a given rim width, there is always a range of values acceptable, 225/45 is mostly fitted to a 7.5J rim, but 7J to 8J are fine.
