If it's on a classic, the accepted size is 215/40.
I've had those on mine in 215/40 17" for the last seven years, (NOT the same set, obviously ), and had no problems.
PS: I DID try Goodyears, but have since moved to Toyo Proxes T1R's and love them.

I run 225 45 17 , with the ra gearbox they give you about 4 mph more in each gear , i have ran 215 40 17 and found the car to harder to drive on the limit , less forgiving .

Provided you keep the rolling radius the same, I can think of no logical reason not to fit the 215 in this case as it will put more rubber (not much admittedly) on the road.
Camskill are doing a really good price on Hankook Ventus V12 Evo (check out recent tyre tests) or if you're a bit more flush the Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas are getting lots of positive feedback. I was a bit underwhelmed with the Toyos (don't go round corners fast enough)
