I know this has been asked before but I could do with some advice now and the scoobynet search isnt operational at the minute. Having just bought the last set of 18" wheels from the organised group buy I need to let the guy know what tyres I want with them. Having run Pirelli P-zeros before I have to say I dont like them much and I have heard on numerous occasions on this forum that any other tyre in the size of 215x35x18 will foul the arches on a P1. The only other tyres I would consider are :
1. Yokohama (AVS or something similar)
2. S02's (if still available) or SO3's
3. Toyo F1's
4. Goodyear F1's
Could anybody please advise me if they have run any of these 18" tyres on a P1, and whether or not they do rub. Also out of the three choices I have stated above which do you think is the better tyre ? And finally my last question, if the arches were rolled could I put on ANY make of tyre or would they still rub ?
Really need advice here guys and have to let the guy know within the next 5 days. I really DO NOT want tyres that will foul my arches.
Yours Thankfully !

Have the same dilemma, having to replace my 235/35/18 P zero's on my P1 in the next couple of weeks.
There has been numerous posts on this with opinions both ways, but on balance it seems that other brands do rub on the arches, when you drive "aggressively".
Although there not great in the wet I was just going to replace with another set of Pzero's. I don't want a set of tyres that rub and I don't want to go down to 215 as there's more chance of kerbing the wheel.
Out of interest anyone know what sort of price I should be looking to pay for Pzero's ?

I'll help out as no-one else is stepping in!
I've just put Goodyear Eagle F1s on mine (225/35/ZR18s) and they're a lot better than the P Zeros. Haven't tried the Toyos so couldn't comment but they've been the other tyre people rave about on here (They were dearer and harder to get hold of than the Eagles). I've got a P1 that otherwise hasn't been touched and no probs re rubbing etc (including with my birds pie-shop loving mates in the back!). i.e. don't believe what the dealers tell you about only P Zeros fitting.
Handling noticably better than the P Zeros (much less understeer, better braking and cornering, esp in wet etc) but ride is harsher and I now actively avoid pot-holes as I feel every ripple in the road.
Have fun!

Good Year F1s!! I'm running them on my WRX now with the P1 style 18"s (225/40ZR18 on the MY'01). HUGE improvement over the PZero Rossos I had on before...

Ricky,
Just read your thread and I had the very same dilema.I spoke to a number of people about this. The problem is if you buy any tyre other than the p zero and it does rub, you are then stuck with them as they would be classed as part worn.Prodrive told me they tested numerous tyres and all rubbed and recommened the p zero, however they would say this as pirelli sponsor the wrc car.I also spoke to mellow who is very knowledgeable about the scooby and very helpful. He ran toyos on his p1 but had to run 215/35/18,he also had tried numerous tyres and could not find any that did not rub other than the p zero without going down to 215s.Mellow highly recommends the toyos but you would have to put 215/35/18s on.I know other people run goodyear and falkens but I would think very carefully before fitting them,as you might have to start messing about getting the arches rolled. You should also consider how you drive the car.If you don't push the car in the wet I don't think you will have a problem with the p zero and could run 225/35/18.This is what I decided to do and have had no problems in the wet so far(touch wood).
Hope this is of some help to you.

I've also got the Yokohamas on my P1 with the 18" wheels.
They've got a nice band around the edge which would very quickly show if there was any rubbing. Needless to say, they are fine.
I think it was all a clever ploy!
Thanks
Kurt

mspeed is correct when he says that a wider tread profile will reduce the risk of kerbing to some extent. If you put a wider section tyre on a particular size wheel you get more overhang of the side wall over the rim of the wheel. This overhang is more likely to protect the rim from minor damage. However, it is also more likely to rub on your bodywork (as it is wider) and also will result in flexing of the sidewall and hence less control.
There are other forms of rim protectors - so tyre designs have a band that sits over the rim again to give protection without the movement associated by the extra width.
