Potenzas crap when running low?
Hi guys,
This last week my rear end feels like it wants to over take me when ever i give it some welly in a corner, even something like a slow 20mph one and then just floor it.
At first i thought it was the front end that felt wrong, but the more it did it the more i thought its maybe the back.
The car feels normal if i boot it in a straight line, its just when corners are involved its a bit scary.
I havent ever had a car thats not front wheel drive till my scoob so its a strange feeling im having.
My question is, are potenzas a bit **** when they get low? or are scoobs generally hairy when the rears are near end of life?
The reason i ask is my front were changed about 3 months ago. Frontle grip obviously changed a lot when they were done, despite them not being quite on the wear markers. However i felt in control of the front end till they were changed.
Now my rears are just above the wear marks and the back feels like it wants to steer me into hedges all the time.. does anyone think there is something else wrong with the car or it is indeed due to the low tyres on the back? - i've never had a car where the rear tyres 'do something'
Cheers guys!

I know exactly what people are going to say.....
a) Tread levels should be about the same depth as you should really be roatating them to keep them wearing evenly.
b) if you leave it like that you could risk buggering up the diffs. :P
c) Yes, this is the reason your feelin tail happy.

never have more tread on the front end of a car. bloody leathal and really unsettles the scoobs (in my opinion) understeer is much safer than sudden oversteer.
to answer your original question, i didn't find any less grip when i had my old reo70's down to the limiters and i was really trying to kill them on some roundabouts they tramline a bit more but that's it.

I've got two bad fronts and two even worse rears. All with wear on one side. I took the car today to get it aligned as it was way out. The drivers side rear adjusting thingy (on the rear arm) was badly rusted and it didn't do much adjusting. On driving home the car felt like the back end was on ice! First I thought the nut had gave way and the rear arm was hanging loose but on checking it, all is intact. Is it just the **** tyres like the above posts? It wasn't half as bad before I had it re aligned.

Keep 'em to one side for a track day.
Unlike most normal tyres they do not seem to overheat and grain/fall to bits when you give iot the beans.
If you got 20,000 out of them, you did well. I seem to get 15k and that is a lot of dual carriageway stuff.

I'd normally change all 4 at same time fella, it is 4WD after all I have RE070's (Jap car) & they are fairly low which is giving me some bad tramlining problems at the mo. Will need to change them all in a few '000 miles.

I have had more tyres on my MY03 WRX. I had to replace 3 in reasonably quick succession as they were mysteriously 'flat' (Screws and nails) on each occasion. Not a cheap past time with our tyres is it? lol

Don't be too cheap MM
Switching them over (fronts to rear etc) at every service keeps the wear even so all 4 can be switched at same time. Got to be better than switching 2 at a time.

Ive just changed the front two,the rears are fine. The rear tyres have been on since new(06)10k.
Ive stuck with the potenza's because the car was fantastic handling wise(in the dry anyway!)And thats what subaru released the car with.

makes no difference in my opinion, change the tyres in pairs only as required unless your on a mission to spend your money.handling problems on full boot can be down to loads of different road conditons..tarmac... camber... road damage etc.unless you drive around at full nuts all the time then save your money.
P.S less tread more grip(dry only)

Not too sure about that.
My personal feeling is there is a marked drop off point before the legal limit in dry conds.
Wouldn't mind a technical response on that subject.

Eh
You'll pay for all 4 eventually so buying a pair at a time saves nowt. As above, just rotate them every 6/12 months & they'll wear evenly. 2 new tyres & 2 old ones must be worse than 4 new ones ...
