New Slicks - 'Running-in'?
#1
Does anyone have any good advice on how to 'run-in' a new set of slicks?
I'm sure you dont just put 'em on and blat out your fastest lap (but hey, I'm usually wrong )

David, with new slicks it's important to 'scrub them in' (clean the surface of any mould releasing agent etc) and also get them up to working temperature.
Just start slow and build up speed gradually over 5-6 laps. On a clockwise circuit, make sure the right-hand side of the tyres gets properly worked, too. After that, just two laps should be enough in future but never go out on cold slicks and give it immediate hammer, or they'll have you off.
Slicks give huge grip, but they tend to be harder to slide and can break away without much warning when on the limit. Find a couple of safe corners where you can easily over do it in safety, and see how they react.
Richard.

Hi Jo.
Daemon Tweeks have some TA40's, Scoobymania also have some too. However, if I ever get to confirm the correct tyre size, I found a really cheap supply of Michelin S7E's due to rule changes on the use of slicks in rally (well thats what I was told)
If 18/62-16 are usable, then I'll let the whole board know (once I've got my set )

O.K. Pete C. has confirmed that 18/62/16 is a suitable size.
I have just ordered 4 'new' Michelin S7E (medium/hard compound)slicks from a chap called Andy Ewings of MotorSport Parts. He bought a shed load of them for this years rally season, only for rule changes to make them 'obsolete' They have been 'scrubbed' but thats all.
The price..... £25 a corner, no VAT
Check out his company website
