What size Tyres on 17 inch wheels, MY00
I currently have 215/45/17 on an MY00. I now need to fit new black boots and took a look at what was recommended.
After some careful weighing up of my options, I have decided to go for the Goodyear F1 GS-D3's. Next came the matter of size.
People seem to be running either 40 or 45 profile. However I thought I had read that it should have 40 profile fitted. I would have assumed that the 45 profile gave a slightly less harsh ride and should be less prone to tramlining.
Is there anything else to bear in mind here like speedo accuracy

Standard size on MY00 is 205/50/16. The size of tyre in 17s that has roughly the same rolling radius is 215/40/17 or 205/45/17. Most people fit 215/40/17 which is available from GoodYear, Toyo, Bridgestone etc.

..but surley there is minmal difference in rolling circumerfence ian thus speedo readings . and surley 45 would be more comfortable. the other issues would be wether they may rub -with 215 45 -which again would be dependant on offset used - clearly nearer to 52.5 (for classics) the better

Standard Tyres
205/50/16 611.4mm
Recommended Fitment
215/40/17 603.8mm
205/45/17 616.3mm
The other tyres are
215/45/17 625.3mm
The number after each size is Rolling Radius. Gearing / speedo will be affected the further away from standard.
Cheers,
Ian.

From SIDC FAQ:-
4.3.2 16 Inch Wheels
For 16 inch wheels, the recommended tyre size is 205/50 VR (or ZR) 16. In this size, there are much fewer choices available, most of which tend to be at the performance (read expensive) end of the market. The same criticisms of the standard Bridgestone Potenzas will presumably apply in the 16 inch size, and at the time of writing, it is probably too soon for most '98 model owners to give feedback on alternative fitments. Tests carried out by UK and German magazines for similar sized tyres rated the Bridgestone S-02 the best overall tyre, having particularly good wet weather performance. Meanwhile the S-02 Pole Position is a softer compound variant which appears to give outstanding dry-weather grip too. The Goodyear Eagle F1, and Toyo T1-S have also had many favourable reviews by Impreza owners. Tyre performance is a very subjective issue, and tyres which suit some driver/car/environment combinations, may not be suited to others.
4.3.3 17 Inch Wheels
For those with 17 inch wheels, there is very little choice in the recommended tyre size of 205/45 ZR 17, in fact we only know of the Yokohama A520, the Pirelli P-Zero Asymmetrico and the Dunlop SP9000. There are, however, more choices available in the alternative size of 215/40 ZR 17 (including the highly rated Bridgestone S-02).

I have 215/45s on factory option Prodrive/Speedline 17s on a MY99
TBH, I asked for 40s and got 45s, I decided to live with them and they have been absolutely no problem at all - no rubbing. They are now nearly worn out and I was thinking about getting 40s to replace them on the basis of a shallower and therefore stiffer sidewall.
As has been said before, the standard size is 205/50/16 and 215/40s have a smaller diameter (appx 8mm) and 215/45s are bigger (appx 14mm). The size that most closely matches standard is 225/40/17 (within 1mm). It's easy to work out for yourself - diameter (215/40/17) = 17" (431.8mm) + twice sidewall height (40% of 215mm x 2 = 172) giving 603.8mm overall dia.
I would love to know if these work on a standard offset 17 without rubbing because I would buy them if they did. I have posted this before and no-one knew (or no-one who knew was looking...)
My guess is that they would, given that the 215/45 is OK - anyone tried?
