Default 225/40/18 in MY00 ?

Hi chaps,
I just ordered a set of 7,5"x18", ET53 P1 wheels and now I'm after tyres.
I know the right set up is 215/35/18 or 225/35/18, but I really want to go 225/40/18 tyres. Is this possible without bigger mods ? How many have 225/40/18 tyres in Classic and what mods have to do ?
And pics would be nice too.

Cheers,
Mika

225/40 on an eighteen is both very tall and very wide for a classic. It's over 25mm larger diameter than the 205/50-16 the car is designed to run.

Not only are you going to run into arch proximity issues and 12mm increased ground clearance, you've also got a 4% lengthening of the overall gearing to contend with - complete with the potential consequences for your speedo accuracy.

If you know 35's are the right aspect on 18"'s, why so keen to go with taller ones? Too late to say so really but if you wanted a taller sidewall you should have gone with 17's. On the wheels you've ordered, 215/35 would be my preference.

why your preference with the 215 greasmonkey? i've got 225 and didn't really consider about changing from what subaru/prodrive put on the P1 wheel

i'm just gonna have a look on mytres to see if there's a price difference though

i have 225-18-40 on my classic wagon. they do rub under hard cornering but the tyres are to good to throw away. when i do need a set i will get the 215-18-35

Simply because, IMO, these cars are simply overtyred at 225, you don't need it. With a lot of modern cars, the tyre profiles and widths seem to be chosen for marketing reasons rather than anything else, and this is a case where less is often more.

Handling is nicer all-round with a 205 or 215. Sure, ultimate adhesion levels are a tiny fraction lower in the dry, but the transition from grip to slip to slide is more progressive, and the car's just more enjoyable to drive quickly when pressing on cross-country.

Ive got 225/40/18s on mone as well with no rubbing.

However, next tyre im thinking about:

225/35/18s

Norris designs runs 235/40/18s which i need to find out about

215/35/18s on the classic i think is way to harsh of a ride

Mika, have you considered 215 / 40 18's mate.
If your interested, I've got some brand spanking new Falken's
These are a good quality tyre, with good rim protection etc.
Should be less prone to rubbing than the 225 as well!

Thumbs up

Ian, yes I have considered 215/40/18 and I think I'm going to give them a try. 215/35 is killer here in Finland and if 225/40 is on the edge, 215/40 is the best choice. Falken is good cheper price tyre, I know. The only bad think is I live in Finland, so maybe the delivery costs are bigger than the price of tyres.
Are they FK-451 ? Give me a PM and we could chat about them.
Cheers,
Mika

Hm...

I have just fitted my JDM STI 5 Type R with ET50 8x18 wheels, and I covered them with 225/40/R18 tires... Rubbing everywhere...

I will have my arches rolled at the back, which should solve the problem at the back corners, but I do not know what to do with the front, because of diameter issues... (It only seems to touch the plastic inner cover of the fender)...

Any advise by anyone who have done something similar???

Thank you in advance...

Cheers,

R

225/35/18's are fine on the Classic with the OZ et53 wheels. I have them on the P1 with no rubbing whatsoever, they are dearer to buyy than 215/35/18's but the extra width looks far better and offers more rim protection than the 215's

225/40's are for the Bugeye onwards cars IIRC.

Indeed, I have read about the Classic tyre size as 225/35 for 18" wheels, however, here in HUngary the road quality is below average in quality, so I really wanted to have higher walls, but remain the 18" wheels (plus 225/40's are easier to buy and they are cheaper too, because the sidewalls are not reinforced)...

So, I have read about "M0NEY" 's case and since he said the 225/40's are not rubbing, I tried (plus he had P1 suspension, which is similare to STI)... I hoped he will answer me, how he resolved the situation...

Cheers,

R.
