Default Bad Brakes

Hi can anyone help, MY00 feels like it has the worst brakes ever, checked the pads and disks and all seem fine but brakes are very spongy. also when braking i often hear a clunking noise ( like metal hitting metal) at low speed. The car had MOT and full service 2 months ago.

Cheers

The spongey feel would normally be a problem in the hydraulic system somewhere. Could be the fuid is tired or that the system just needs bleeding. Could also be the hoses, if they are getting on a little have a look for small cracks or bulges when the pedal is pressed. As for the noises, a hundred and one things really, very hard to tell without playing with the car.

Bleed the entire system and if you dont have goodridge ssteel hoses, change them.

I use dot5.1 fluid and change it once a year.

On the subject of steel hoses, are they easy to fit (DIY) or do they need to be fitted by a garage ?
My braking is a little bit the same, I have put some red stuff brake pads in and it still feels not as sharp as it should be.

Haven't done them on a scooby but generally, hose replacement is a reasonably easy (if messy) job. Just make sure you keep everything clean (keep plenty of rags around as you will drip brake fluid around the place), use decent spanners so you don't bur the connectors or bleed nipples and make sure you bleed the system thoroughly afterwards (and top it up obviously).
