I need to get some winter tyres for the trips to the slopes this winter. So what do I get ?
I need something which is reasonable on tarmac (still have to get to the slopes) but good on ice and snow. I also want VFM, not looking for ultimate performance if I need to take out a mortgage to afford them.
So far Pirelli Ice Sports is the main contender, but what feedback do people have from last winter ?

I've gone for Toyo Snowprox in a 205/45/17. Still yet to try them out. I know that Goodyear also produce a dedicated winter tyre as well.

I've just bought a set of Nokian WR winter tyres my my STi UK however I've yet to get them fitted.
These have been very highly rated in Scandinavian countries for performance on snow and ice, so I am very confident about my choice.
Rob.

Thought I'd kick this off again.
Anyone know of well-priced winter tyre sellers. Anyone I try locally obviously has no idea on Winter tyres and seems to quote the list price.... I need 205 55 16
Thanks

B-i-J has a set of Michelin Drice tyres now, as mention on Canuck's thread.
Nokian WRs get good reviews for their all round ability (dunno about ice tho). Not used them myself...
In the end, when there is a chance of ice being around, about the only way to combat it is to drive v. slow IMHO - even the best winter tyres can't save you all the time, although they can add some margin.

Just fitted Nokian WR winter tyres in 225x18x40 after I saw Rob D’s tyres. Look good and work well in the wet and dry. We have had a little snow and took the opportunity to play hard. The grip was outrages compared to standard GY GSD3's and although the car wants to "drift" more in the wet when pushing hard with the winter tyres on, it is very progressive and very very predictable indeed, to the point that the car is much more fun to drive and the tail hangs out very nicly
Don’t get me wrong either; even with the winter tyres on the car performance is only slightly impaired compared to the Good Years I have used for two years and it is still very capable of giving most things out there a right good spanking
I wouldn't go anywhere else when you consider value for money; 440 GB pounds for 4 x 18" tyres.

PS, I’m driving a Prodrive Sti7 with PPP, Prodrive springs, anti lift and anti dive kit, with Whiteline ARB c/w solid drop links and Geometry settings to suit fast road use. Will play with pressures when I get home after the NY.

I don't know how objective or up to date the information is, but there is a website called tyretest.com which has information on how drivers rate the performance of different tyres, winter tyres included.
It seems as though the average weightings are taken over about 3 years, so it's hardly going to do justice to the latest tyres from manufacturers. And as peoples optionions vary and the cars used to test are different, maybe best to treat the stats with some care.
I'm having difficulties finding comparison data on the web. There seems to be a number of reports on winter tyres by German car magazines, and no doubt lots of data from scandanavia if you know where to look, but not a lot in English. Anyone found any good info ?
