Can anyone tell me if this can be done without rubbing. have heard in the past of some problems when fully loaded over bumps, however having examined the wheelarches at rear there seems to be plenty of room, perhaps im not looking at the right areas for clearance problems.

Why would you want to do this? I can't think of any good reason, and quite a few bad reasons. Like price, weight, should be on 7.5in rims and...
... you probably will get rubbing problems at the rear, depending on your wheel off-set.
Sounds like £500 down the pan to me
Cheers,
Richard.

would that be the outside of the wheelarch in other words if it were to rub it would rub on the outside edge of the tyre .the rubber strip u refer to goes round the wheelarch on the outside then its the paintwork ?

Surely if you fit too big a tyre on the standard rim you're in danger of creating a lot more flex in the sidewall. So when you start to initiate a turn, the first thing that happens is the side walls flex etc etc. Might look good but i'd have thought you could easily worsen the handling.

were only talking 5 mm per side above say a 215 tyre ,was hopeing to protect rim and improve the handling due to the fact that the side wall is turned in which is trying to be turned the other direction under heavy cornering at least on the outside edge where the max effect is.

I would stay with the standard 205/40/17. My mate tried messing about with tyre sizes on his MY97 and it was a disaster, my advice (which doesn't count for much I'll add) stay standard mate.
