Default There goes another MAF!!

Best i order another MAF from subaru in the morning.

I never had one go like this before, normally just get idling problems.

Booted the car earlier and it went pop (back fired) at about 6000 rpm and lost all power, after that is was running really lumpy and would boost properly and was very jurky under light boost. Pulled into a car park, popped the bonnet couldn't see anything obvious (pipe blow off etc) car wasn't lidling very well, touched the MAF sensor and the engine died, restarted it and the Check Engine light stayed on. I then limped home off boost, swapped the MAF for a spare one and restarted the car light went out, swapped the MAF back and restarted and the check engine light came straight back on (just to confirm it wasn't a
coincidence). Refitted the good MAF and went for a drive, now fine again.

The newer more robust MAF Sensors have a Grey or Green paint spot on them I think. There the ones to go for.

The last 2 i've had, have been the improved ones with the small green paint mark on, doesn't seem to make much difference, think i'm going to change my air filter asap to a more MAF friendly one.
Don't know what it was like at high revs, i didn't take the chance on revving it high cause i knew something was wrong, it was also popping quite a lot when lifting off the throttle, think it was over fueling.

Mine does exactly the same, mostly on first to second changes and occasionally when i ease off and let it gently run down. Sounds awesome though! Out of interest mine is a piper viper induction kit is yours the same?
Fitting a front mount soon, so i'll prob have to change to a Apexi power intake as the viper is quite bulky so i don't think the new alu pipes will fit past it. Any one have the Apexi induction kit? And do u have good results through it?

I've got a blitz on mine and it's too big for my front mount, i had to an induction scoop on my bonnet so it would close.

The popping is unburnt petrol in the exhaust i beleive, it's quite natural to get it occasionally especially if you have a straight through exhaust, but mine was doing even under very light throttle when driving completly off boost.

Cheers mate, thanks for the offer, i already had a spare it was the one i took off last time i changed it (don't think there was anything wrong with it), it solved the problem. 99-00 MAF's are different to the earlier ones. I'm going to order a replacement and fit it when the i get a new induction kit, and keep the one i'm using at the mo as a useable spare.

Make sure you wash out the oil of any induction kit you get Dean. And make sure you get a MAF friendly Induction Kit. I did alot of research before I bought mine.

I never looked at that one. I narrowed it down to the GGR and Roger Clarke Motorsport ones, since APS stopped doing their Cold Air kits. Went for RCM one in the end and had it mapped in with my Apexi ECU. Sounds AWESOME! Makes the standard Dump Valve pretty loud! And the induction sucking noise is great!
