Steering 'kicks' on full lock
#1
Don't know if I should be concerned, or whether this is normal with PAS (Scoob's the first car I've had with PAS), but when I reverse on full lock, I hear a loud 'clonk' noise and the steering wheel kicks once.
Anyone had this - is it normal (or potentially fatal )?
Can't see any obvious loose bits on the steering/suspension but I'm going to get the garage to look at it when it's in soon for the next service.
Car's a UK MY98 saloon with 52,000 miles.
Cheers,
Steve

I haven't experience the "kick" you are talking about, but you shouldn't hold the steering on completely full lock (i.e. against the stops at the end of the steering rack), as per the manual. If I do this by mistkae, even for only a second or two, I can definitely hear the power steering pump/motor/whatever straining. See if it make s a difference if you unwind a fraction of lock instead of holding the wheel against the stops.

My wife's car (Saxo) did this, until we changed one of the front tyres (it was more worn than the one on the other side). The noise stopped after that -- I presumed it was some sort of diff-related thing.

Cheers guys - looks like I'll be crawling around the car again tomorrow, jacking it up and wobbling bits!
Mungo - I'll try to ease off a bit in the meantime. Trouble is that my girlfriend's parking spaces are off a narrow, angled driveway, so it's a bit of a sod to get in & out. One of those things I guess.
Thanks all,
Steve

At last - sorted!
Couldn't see anything wrong with the CV boots/joints etc. Clonk was getting a bit worse and got dealer to look at it today (during 60K service)
Cause? Loose front suspension bolts! They've tightened them up (didn't ask which bolts exactly) and no more clonk! Yippee!
Thought I was going to need new CV joints. Cheers Lancaster!
