Can a Main Dealer change Springs ?
#2
Surely any main dealer that is capable of rebuilding an engine should at least know someone they can ask about the advanced engineering techniques and tools required in order to swap a set of springs.

Sonic,
My mate reckons that Tweeks said they would fit springs and do 4 wheel alignment for £90 + the price of the springs, dont know if that includes VAT?
Might be worth giving them a call - I would go during the week though cos it gets really busy at weekends.

Cheers Ayde
Just been back, and they can do them, and they have a set of Eibachs in too for a good price, so that means I can sell these Sti5 Springs I just bought
Got my Magnex DP fitted (did it myself with some 5ive-o help ) no probs with it, fitted like a glove too

Well I was going to do them myself, but I would need to spend half the fitting cost on the right tools
I would need a Trolley Jack, Axle Stands, thats 30 quid minimum, then I need a new 17mm Spanner, as my old one snapped, and then a Torque Wrench (as I dont have one)
I got loads of time, cos Im off work this week, just not all the right tools !

You also need a deep 12mm + 19mm socket, standard ones don't reach.
A set of spring compressors, an impact air wrench or Heath-Robinson alternatives to get the strut top nut off without the shock just spinning.
The strut comes off in 5 minutes, it then took me 1 hour of cursing to get the springs swapped on the bench.
Went and bought the impact wrench today (already have the compressor) so the other 3 struts should be a lot quicker.
My dealer wanted £230 to swap + £80 for wheel alignment.
Will go back to them for alignment when I've finished.
Can buy Whiteline ARB + links + strut brace for fitting charge, so will justify it to the wife that way.
She always tells me how much money she has saved in the sales by buying loads! Now it's my turn.

Edited for spelling-doh!

Axle Stands - 10 quid
Spring Comps - 25 quid
Sockets - ???
Torque Wrench - ???
Dealer will fit them for 99 quid + VAT, whilst its in for its 3 year Service

Sockets - about £5 each from Halfords
(You can probably do better in terms of price - like buying a rack of them for £15 to £20 - just buy good ones, as this job will test them!!)
Torque wrench - my CK cost me £50.
Don't forget that good quality tools are well worth having - I'd say that in the long term you'd be better off with the tools - they'll give you a good few years of service for all the other "little jobs" you pay £99 + vat at the dealers
Oh and as for getting the top nuts undone, there's a hole for an 8mm allen key in the top of the strut. Nic's Dad made me a special socket with a hexagon on the top for a 19mm spanner - the 8mm allen key went through the socket into the damper top. Easy(ish)!
(It is best to do this bit when the car is on the ground.)

Thanks for the tip on the top nuts, I'll try it.
dnb
thanks, I saw the allen key hole, I had to use an old 19mm socket held with pipe grips, while I turned the allen key. Not very easy at all. If I had a welder I would have welded a bar to the old socket!
