Fort William has Super (Esso).

Inverness has a few (Esso).

Contin has (Shell).

Ullapool should have (Shell).

Oban should have somewhere.

Between these, you should never be more than about 40 miles from a Super selling station.

As long as you don't visit John o Groats If you are feeling brave it is just possible to make Inverness-Wick-Inverness on one tank (admittedly I did have to let someone else do a fair percentage of the driving as I never managed it if I did all the driving )

Inverness to thurso is 105 miles, you should comfortably make it up and down on a tank and add another 30 if you really want to see JO'G but i promise you ain't missing much! What you driving and is it anything special (other than to you!) Cheers Scott.

Thumbs up

North of Ullapool is definitely worth the drive. If going from Inverness, head out on the main road across the bridge, and then take the mountain road to short cut out out a bit of the A9 (Alness to Bonar Bridge - B9176).

Then from Bonar Bridge head towards Lairg on the A836.

Not far out of Lairg, take a left on the A838 up the side of Loch Shin, all the way to Laxford Bridge. Stunning single track road, with almost lunar landscapes towards the end.

From there it is a very fast and flowing road all the way down to Ullapool. Re-fuel there, and also have lunch.

Out of Ullapool, take the scenic road towards Gairloch (A832)

At Kinlochewe, take a right and head towards Torridon. (A896).

Carry on through Shieldaig (some excellent photo opportunities along this whole road from Ullapool->Gairloch->Kinlochewe->Shieldaig )

From Sheildaig, carry on down the single track road, and you'll eventually reach an open section, with a road to the right. This is the Applecross road Enjoy it all the way to the top, and then come back down again. If you have time, go all the way to Applecross, and back around the coast towards Shieldaig again.

If short of time, then just come back down again, and follow the road to Lochcarron. From there it's a straight road back to Inverness. Mostly single track to start with, but quite fast. Road opens out very nicely once you get to Achnasheen, and most people love this stretch of road. Only single carriageway (not single track), but it's very wide, smooth, can see for miles etc. Once you get to Garve, you are back into heavier traffic again, and it's usually heavily policed (so stick rigidly to speed limits, especially once you hit the A9 again).

Have fun - you won't be disapointed with the roads or the scenery.

Cheers all

I am back tonight..

Last 2 days have been mucho fun
Went up A9 to Aviemore... Up to Cairngorns... then up to Inverness...
Filled up and then went down East side of Loch Ness... Great Road!
And back up West side.

Then today... followed a bit of the route u suggested John...
Went from Inverness up to Alness.. along the B9176
Bonar Bridge to Lairg .. thats an open road..
Lairg to Laxford Bridge is superb!!
I felt like Colin McRae .. single track.. only met 4 cars, a lorry and a Digger.... in what... 50 miles?
Great scenery... I see what u mean about lunar landscapes near the end.. rocks, craters, and sandy looking scree... I hope the pics I took will turn out ..

Back down the coast... I took a detour along a B road that I can remember the name of... erm.. From Newton.. along the coast... and backround to Lochinver or something...
Some road! ... I felt like I was on Challenge of a Lifetime.. driving a car along 2 planks over a ravine.. nutz!
great fun tho!
was doing 40mph tops... up, down, left, up, right, down, left, right, up, down and right ah ****.
20 miles of that... i felt a bitty air sick

Then joined that fast flowing road... wow.. see what u mean!!
loved it ... absolutely loved it...!

Got to Ullapool... then going/went to knockhill this eve... so missed the next bit out... tho I shall be back to drive it... I think I can reach it in 1 day.. so next hols..
went Ullapool to Inverness to Perth...

Great drives..
highly recommened!

oh.. and petrol ... used the Kessock (sp?) Esso in Inverness and the Shell one in Ullapool... cheers!!

and one more thing...
took it easy on the way up to Inverness... 200 miles... 35.5 mpg!!
will easily make JoG...

I was in Oban last week and was told there was no SUL anywhere near, and none on Mull if you're visiting there.

Does anyone know nay better?

What chance everybody lists there local suppliers and we build up a map of whole country, for trips and tours?

Yup, no Super in Oban anywhere. Hasn't been for years.

Nearest is Lochgilphead (40 miles south).
