1997 catalunia what do people reckon?
Hi all, after the heartbreak of my old wrx going pop and selling up I've decided 2 buy another classic.2.5k budget,I've found a 97 catalunia, havnt seen it in the flesh yet but seems a genuine car, standard engine with with a lot of money spent keeping the car up 2 scratch, fresh respray, only thing that worries me is the mileage...151k! Never been rebuilt and the owner wants 2.5k for it!any thoughts?

I'm not sure why people think catalunyas hold their value more than other classics other than the limited run. Lot of cash for age/mileage etc but without seeing and driving you can't really comment.
Guess if its the car for you it's worth it.

So many limited run classics about. If you have always wanted one then its worth it but I wouldn't pay more than a std uk2000 for just black paint and different seats, for £2000 you could find a nice clean late classic with fsh 60k on the clock for example. You could pick up a nicely moddifed wrx or maybe a v3/4 sti for that budget, I would personally hold out

I have no idea either I think it's where it's had a respray and a bit spent on it he's finding it hard to cut his losses.as it happened before I'm obsessed with bottom ends letting go,it's got this far without issues but I'm thinking pump, intercooler and map n the extra 40/50bhp's guna stress the old girl out lol

Interesting, i found the opposite, i found a nice UK car eventually but far more dogs around than decent ones, in fact the one i bought was the only one that i found for sale i actually liked at the time. Going back to the OP's question, i agree this car sounds overpriced. Unfortunately a respray isnt worth alot, in fact in could be a negative in some respects as its no longer original and it may not be of the original quality. On top of the mileage i'd say this is a 2k car max, and at that it would need to be pristine mechanically and in terms of body/interior.
To give you an idea i paid £2250 for mine, 98 UK turbo, near immaculate paintwork, no rust, 95k on the clock, every receipt from new, 2 previous owners the last for 10 years, every service done when due if not before, and only just had cambelt, plugs and all fluids changed. Plus some decent upgrades, Eibach Pro Springs, Magnex exhaust, black diamond discs etc and all the original parts, plus a tracker and top alarm system fitted.

Number 157 I think,i'm gonna go have a look anyway,I no it's waaay overpriced but you don't see many genuine imprezas about and the cars local,I've travelled miles on all my previous cars 2 get the car i want and can't be bothered 2 much this time, depending on condition id be willing to pay 2k max but I don't think he'll go 4 it,when you've spent a lot on a car it's a big fat pill 2 swallow.

Iirc at the end of my lease (in 2002 - first owner had it 2 years, I took a 3-year lease out) the car was priced on Parkers, Glass's etc at about £12k garage and £9-ish 'average' condition.
I put it up for £8k (buy-out residual was £6k) and never got any interest.
(E & M and Autotrader, or whatever it might have been then).
That's 11 years ago.
Also, compare what he's asking to, say, a WR1.
There's 7 years between them, the WR1 springs to mind well before a cat does in the buying and selling stakes and you can get them for around 8K (some less, some showroom sales more).
I couldn't sell a 5-yr-old Cat for that, yet a 9-yr-old WR1 does.
I have to say that it hooked me on Subarus (was my first one, and your first scooby will always hook you), but my 95 WRX Classic was better, and I paid £1,800 for it 3 or 4 years ago.

If I was in your shoes id sit tight and wait for a late classic to come up with sub 100K on the clock. Its surprising how much impreza £2500 buys these days.

I won't really have the cash til the end of the month anyway but I get impulsive, all I'm finding in Hampshire are wagons or stickered up uk turbo's "chipped to 340bhp" crap lol
