Default Newbie help

Hi there guys signed up ages ago when I was thinking of getting a scooby well that time has come and should be getting a classic shape import at the weekend
Now just after some advise what's best to look out for on them I've been told its had a replacement engine with a td05 turbo on ?

Also is it true that I've heard the engines arnt very reliable and also what's the fuel consumption really like on them as I do a bit of motaway miles going to and from work (about 60miles aday for 5days)
Any help would be great I've been after one for years and now that day is getting closer I carnt wait just the clubs that I'm in have all told me to stay away from them as I'm a vw owner at the min but still don't seem to phase me lol
Cheers guys

What year is the car?
IS it a WRX or STI?
Replacement or rebuilt engine?
Never had engine problems with either of mine (owner for 10 years) however treat them badly and yes it may break.
If you do a lot motorway miles then you will be buying the wrong sort of car imo.

The main problem is miss treatment. Use the wrong fuel, add a cheap mod or a cetain mod without a remap and you will blow the engine.

The other problem is there are far too many "Subaru Specialists" out there who will quite happily take your money and ruin you car.

My main questions would be. Who has replaced the engine and done the work? Who mapped the car?

If you can put these on to your thread we can steer you in the right direction.

We are quite a friendly bunch, don't forget to try and use the search function as people can get a little annoyed answering the same question 10 times a day.

You really should run it on 97 RON minimum (although they don't seem to like BP Ultimate for some reason) so that puts the running price up slightly.
Driving off boost and steady you may see 30mpg but that's not much fun

Are you looking/buying the car from a dealer or private?

Perhaps posting a link to the sale may help.

It's private buddy would post a link up but he took it down as the deal was going ahead so we both agreed to stupid I know it looks ok it has the updated front end as far as I can tell I've just messages the guy to ask him a few of the questions and I drive like a grandad anyway as I have young kids I just like knowing I have the power there if need be do they have to run on that ? Or can they run on 95 ? Just out of interest

Well I used to run my 93WRX on 95 and it was fine until you actually wanted to have a spirited drive and that's when the extra couple of RON points helps so I just stuck with 97+.

Well the deal isn't done until you pay for it. It may be worth asking if there are any local Impreza drivers that could pop along with you and give it a good looking over and take it for a test drive.

You should brace yourself for 23mpg fuel consumption.

The best MPG I've ever seen out of mine was 26mpg, and that was on a 75-80mph motorway run, round town it'll be nowhere near that. Add that to the fact that you should only really run them on premium fuels (Vpower ideally) and its not the cheapest car to run as a commuter!

With regards to the TD05 it's a turbo that subaru put on a lot of their classics I believe, so that shouldnt be any cause for concern unless the turbo itself is knackered.

Cool

I just filled my tank up with Tesco Momentum. I had just under a quarter of a tank and £52 filled it up at 1.36.9 p/l So I reckon depending on fuel prices around £70 will fill from empty. I would expect to see between 250-300(tops) miles to a tank full. Probably more like 275 but depending on how you drive it Check for rust! Especially around the rear quarters above the bumper. Its a water trap Oh and the front wings can rot a bit too.

Look after it and you will get hours of enjoyment out of it, treat it like a dog and it will bite you in the butt! From what I have been told, the engines are bullet proof but you have to look after them. Pretty much the same as most/all cars

Enjoy the driving experience in it, they make you feel happy and make driving enjoyable and knowing that you have hundreds of horses under your left, is a bonus lol I am on my fourth classic Impreza and my 2nd WRX import (M reg) although this one has cost me lots of money to fix (got done up like a kipper when I got it) I have had minimal problems with all of them.
