Piece of foam inside WRX STI air intake??
Hi all.
We are looking at buying an ex-demo WRX STI (2012) 4 door. On close inspection it's a really nice car, but I was wondering what (if anything) is going on inside the front air intake (the rad one under the number plate).
Over to the left (as you look at the car, so off side) is a small off-square piece of greay foam (about 10cmx10cm) which is barely held on with a bit of glue at one corner. On the other side there is a small black plastic mounting plate, but no foam.
Is this meant to be there on both sides? What does it do? Is it meant to be hanging on by a thread!?
I would really appreciate someone having a look in their rad air intake on a current STI and letting me know what they see please.
Thanks in advance!

Yup just the same on my MY11 hatch... Tried to tidy it up when I fitted my Zunsport lower grill, but with no luck it just kind of hangs there out of sight on the off side, but you can't see it unless you go looking for it, by the way there is the same foam on the near side but it appeared to be down the side of the radiator from what I remember.
I think it's just part if the bumper to body packing to stop too much air bypassing the radiator, but I'm sure there will be others on here who know for sure!

Thanks. On this one there is definitely only one piece - and that's on the O/S.
It is stuck to a small black plastic strip - of which there is also one on the N/S - making me think one is missing!
Any photos folks can take in there would be much appreciated.
Out of interest - was the zunsport grille easy to fit? ANy holes / driling etc needed? Thanks!

There is a piece either side..........
Full part number is 57780FG000 Packing - Bumper
I almost lost one of mine as they are stuck on using the thinnest of edges.
Lower front grille fitting requires 3 holes to be drilled in the front lower edge.

Mmm must have a look next time i have the grille off...
As Don says just 3 holes, but measure many times drill once I eased the holes slightly to stop the pins distorting the bumper plastic as I pushed the grille back into place, in a stainless vs plastic contest plastic looses. But I am being really picky when I say distorts, spent an age looking at photos of other MY11's with the lower grille to check I hadn't done mine wrong I found the most difficult to fit was the one on the scoop.
If you do buy the car and fit grilles there's a Subaru dealer in Staffordshire and he's selling them on EBay at a really good price, he has some exclusive deal in place with Subaru.

That's right Don, you can't buy MY11 grilles from Zunsport direct, the ones on their site are for MY08 which has a different lower grille shape not sure about the radiator and scoop though... Zunsport politely point you at Subaru if you try to buy direct
