WRX STi UK - High Speed Noise Problems
#1
Has anyone else experienced a sudden and very loud noise when travelling at high speeds. It seems to be coming from the engine bay and could well be wind related.
It's very loud and very unnerving. There doesn't seem to be any consistency, the first time it happened was at 130mph, second time 160+mph and again last night at only 120mph. The noise doesn't impact performance.
Before I go back to the dealer and try and explain the problem (and doing these speeds on the road!) can anyone shed any light ?
Apart from this problem - the car is fantastic.

Same problem with WRX's too, although I have never had it.
Someone thought it was to do with airflow over the trim at the edge of the screen. As I had a new screen early on, this may explain things.
160+ LOL. In the interests of fault diagnosis, I assume
You actually weren't doing over 155mph, as STis have a speed limiter. JDM cars may be different, but this does apply to all EU spec versions.

Std MY01 5 door.
This was a topic of discussion shortly after MY01s were launched on this very bbs.
At approx 120, a noise like a warning siren kicks off. I have experienced it at as low as 95 when it is very windy (you can understand why).
It is a design "flaw". And yes it does tend to make you slow down, so not entirely a bad thing eh?
One hundred and sixty! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Yep had the same thing with my 2001WRX at about 90 when it was windy.
Suggest you tell dealer you were driving car in Germany when it happened or else they'll try and get out of doing anything, on the grounds that you shouldn't be doing those speeds. That's assuming they'll do anything about this 'feature'

yeah - just to add that I have had this a few times on a WRX MY01 5door. I stopped the car after the first time it happened "What the hell was that!!"
although, it does not happen everytime - I think it only happens when you are driving with the wind hitting the front of the car at a slight component angle.
sounded like a vibration or a wind vortex on something at the front of the car. should have spotted in wind tunnel tests.

Just found same thing...
Maxed car at 150mph last night (won't do it again, honest)
Hellish loud scream at 135, eased off above 145mph.
Interested that the sti did 160mph plus, my pppwrx was absolutely finished at 150 on a long flat straight.
Trouble is i now have the most impressive fly-splats I've ever seen...

yep i can confirm that there is a loud and sudden "Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa"
noise at around 160mph(she went off the clock).... before you say anything. i was actualy on a german autobahn showning a porche boxter my rear end....
it was a pretty strong head on wind when it happened and it scared the hell out of me... but this is all making sense.. ithought it may of been somthing to do with the restricter

I had a my98 and i've now got a sti7 - they both do it. Could it be the intercooler intake?
Whats more disconcerting;
The noise at 150mph
Or the way the bonnet flex's?? (on the sti)

Glad to hear others have heard it too...Phew!
Had it happen a couple of times around 120mph, the noise seemed to come from the offside lower screen / rear edge of bonnet area.
I won't lose any more sleep over it now

I heard it too when I sat with my mate Pops. He was doing 116.8 in his Sport. When I turned to look I saw his pipe was caught in the window. Ah well, he is careless....Blutes

It is the drivers window on my MY01 that casues the noise.
I proved this to myself my getting the noise and just dropping the window down a bit. This was done at 70mph when I was driving into very heavy winds.
The noise does seem to be cuase by wind speed rather than physical speed.
I sopke to the dealer about it and they said they would check the window alignment, the noise stopped for about 2 months. Time for them to check is again.
Frameless windows allow the glass to shift (fairly obvious really) so the flow of air might not be perfect.
Closing your door by pushing on the glass will not only cause dinger prints on the glass but also can help to pushing the glass out of true.

Never had that problem at the higher speeds in my scoob but like Pete i too have had a replacement windscreen (due to nasty stone breaking it ) but the only thing i suffered from at 6.5k-7k speeds (in 5th) was stone chips
