Default Warming up?

Hi fellow scoobynetters,

I want to know what the correct process is.I've always warmed up every car I ever drove.since I bought my scooby last year I've read and heard so Many times that you should warm up the engine by letting it idle for at least 5 mins or so before driving away.now I let it idle for 3 mins and drive below boost for at least 10 mins.but I've read a few posts where guys are saying that more damage is done that way, and you should start and drive away.
I'm confused, just wanted to know what you guys do.
Even though I've got a turbo timer I haven't had it fitted yet.so I just let her cool down even if I wasn't boosting it.
Come on boys post your views!

Start up, pull away immediately, dont boost or drive on high revs until oil is warm. About 5 to 8 miles.

Exactly how I`ve been told to do. As the oil pressure is higher off idle.
Obviously don`t boost it until waaaay after water temp is up, but afaik its better to drive it than to leave ticking over cooking itself.

i leave it 30 secs then drive off, pointless letting idle for 5 mins, there`s no reason to.ive got just an oil pressure gauge i wait till thats reading about 4 bar on idle before i give it a bit.

To the OP, unless you really really want to fit the turbo timer, don`t bother as they`re unnecessary.

What is it and how does it damage it?

From what I've gathered off experienced tuners on here and elsewhere is leaving it to idle creates hotspots in the engine. Unless its icy and the car needs defrosting, I start up, put my belt on and drive steadily. No need for this idle nonsense (coming from the converted). I'll only let it idle for a bit when getting home from a motorway journey or a bit of boost

Another Scoobynet myth

^^^

Correct, letting it sit there idling does not put energy through the engine so it takes longer to warm up. Bore wash is due to excess fuel - the ECU knows the engine temperature an increases fueling (like an old choke), not all of the fuel is burnt and some will 'wash' the oil off the bores as it passes the piston rings, this also causes fuel in the oil.

These are off the shelf road car engines and are designed to be used, FFS they are not F1 engines.

Letting your car tick over for a couple of minutes will do **** all damage buddy.
I've owned too many high performance cars to count and every one has been given a couple of minutes on the drive ticking over.

Damage is done by putting a cold engine under stress, start it up, give it a minute or so and then drive steady for a good 10 mins.
It's what I do, what I've always done and what I shall do in the future.

As said above - it ain't an F1 car
..... And take the turbo timer and add it to EBay or the dustbin - either way, it will be as much use in those places as on your car.

It takes longer than you would think for the engine to warm up, as above get in and drive off, unless it's frosted i wait for it to defrost a bit then go, give it 10 mins at least before you give it a bit, if you have been giving it some stick go steady for the last mile or two before you get home, bin the turbo timer.
