You'd be better off buying a good used box from a newer car.

David - while you're on can I hijack with a quick Q:

I'm considering a Type R (98 STi) which needs a 'box refurb and would like to fit a gearbox with an extended 5th (same or similar to the one you fitted in my V4 STi Wagon - 752VBCAA). Is this straightforward, and at the same cost?

Cheers

No worries about the hijack I suspect.

That is probably a Version 4 then?, being 98 it could be an early 5 with a TY 754 box of course.

The P1 5th is the higher version and in some cases where the car has a close ratio set fitted, the jump from 4th to 5th is very noticeable. BUT, so is the fuel consumption improvement at motorway cruise.

To convert is about £500.00 + VAT from start to finish, on the box only. That includes labour gaskets and seals and a pair of 5th gears. If the box needs a bigger repair then we would discuss it.

There are three real reasons for the higher gear,

Less revs at cruise = less engine wear.

Improved fuel consumption.

Less overall noise at cruise from engine and exhaust

It then becomes a calculation as to whether the improved fuel consumption will pay for itself in a reasonable time. If you only use the car lightly and at weekends, then it won't.

But you can never calculate how much engine wear you save and thus money.

That help ? David

Sort of

So, you can't just fit another similar box like the one you fitted to my STi Wagon - 752VBCAA which as I understood it was a close 1-4 with extended 5th?

In other words a straight 'box swap, rather than mod'ing?

You're talking about modifying the Type R 'box?

I thought that was what you asked for? Is your car V4 or V5 then ?? As that will be the key to how we do whatever we do.

Why would anyone give their box and £500 for another 752 box. Doesn't make sense to me, we all know the 752's are a load of pony.
I agree, second hand boxes 'can' be a lottery but id rather take the chance and get a newer box. Infact, that's what I just did. Low mile P1 box with diff, shafts, linkage etc etc, £380.
I suppose if you never intend on modding your car then yes, a 752 box will suffice. But we all know what that bug is like, once you start you can't stop. At least with a 754 box you have a bit more to play with.
Just my opinion though for what it's worth, and that's not alot, lol.

No argument from me about how much better an STi TY754 is over everything else, but even they are 10 years old now and metal fatigue doesn't distinguish between age and use.

Synchro is another matter, that costs heaps to repair after you have taken the box out again because it crunches on 4th say.

We have rebuilt some 6 speeders this year for people who have just bought bug eye ones. The viscous is knackered and 4th, 5th or 6th crunch. That usually costs about £600- £800 to fix AFTER it has been taken out again.

Buyer beware.......................
