Default scoob might have to go

after 4 yrs owning imprezas this yrs insurance has hit hard with it being 500 more than last yr . dont know why but it is . which means that the running cost is now beyond a joke . looke like im going to end up in a astra gsi turbo as it half the price to insure and a lot cheaper on parts . wish it didnt have to come to this as i love the scoob and the sound but the good old great britain has completley f&*ked me over with fuel / tax and insurance costs . i beleive thay somthing should be done as its not up to us to pay the for the goverment **** ups

mines opposite way really

car is paid for and only cover 800 - 1000 miles a year so is it worth paying for the amount of use

I've been on ScoobyNet for over 10 years and have never, ever, seen so many posts about selling up due to horrendous running costs.

I sold my Impreza last June - not because costs were high, just because the time had come after buying it new and keeping for 10 years ..... I looked at another Subaru, I desperately wanted one, but it just failed in so many areas that it was madness to buy one again.

Now, 8 months later, would I be really cheesed off had I bought a new Impreza STi in June 2010!! The fuel costs would drive me nuts, the cheap plastic build quality would annoy, the massive depreciation would worry my Bank Manager .... doesn't make any sense, any more.

It's sad to see the end of a Marque - but, here it is happening before us ..... it's a mass evacuation. Last time I saw this was when everyone jumped out of their Sierra Cosworths and they were unsaleable all of a sudden ..... the prices went down the toilet.

But look at the prices of them now

Apparently there are too many Subaru's on the road (reading other forums), so maybe this 'treeshake' could be a good thing for the marque.

Some decent quotes to be found if you look around guys.Last year i paid £380 to groupama(9 yrs ncb on scoob + 6 yrs ncb on honda. After having a rear tyre blow out and wrecking my 99 uk turbo in feb 10, i made a claim for the 1st time in 21 years. My renewal came through and they wanted £1200 . I polietly told them to 'do' one ,and searched around. I finally ended up at keith michaels ,with all the mods declared(stage1) it turned out at £650 which works out at about £55 a mounth to insure a roadgoing rally car ,just need to do some more miles now

If Im paying an excessive amount for tax and insurance Im going to use it as much as I can. Petrol prices are really secondary to me after Ive paid for the other things. Also £500 on a banger is great until you need to start repairing, it fails the MOT and then there is still tax and insurance on top. Offset this against the slightly lower MPG for petrol in the scooby and I wonder how much difference there really is. Then you need to take into account that the enjoyment of driving 5 days a week has just completely gone and I dont see the point. I will be continuing to use mine for work and pleasure, I look forward to my drive in and back home. It makes work more manageable.

Er 20mpg vs 50mpg ... soon adds up fella. If your £500 car fails anything just throw it away & get another! FYI I do 1000 miles per week which would be financial suicide in the scoob

Wow, I can see how that would start to make sense for you then. My MPG is more like 23 town and 35 motorways, average 28mpg. Many people I know have diesels and dont get near the 50mpg of the stated claim, more often than not something in the region of 40. My Dad gets 34 around town in his Vauxhall Zafira diesel (1 year old). If I was to buy a £500 car and throw it away when it doesnt work you can see how financially viable it wouldnt be for me.

I fill up every time & check mileage done since last fill up ... easy way to check mpg

TX.

Edit - I see your point albeit it will get more & more expansive to own a scoob / any petrol performance car over time so IMHO the gap between the two will increase making my suggestion more viable for more people ... does this ring any bells (see link)
