Default have just done a coilpack conversion - thanks to JGM and saiklon

Ive just done a coilpack conversion on my MY95, im now running a v3/4 coilpack.

Ive gotta say, the mod is well worth doing. Obviously 2 of my coils were no good anyway hence the reason for the conversion, but the car pulls a lot smoother now, and im finally hitting target boost.

Total cost was £43. A bit different to paying £65 per new coilpack.

Big thanks to JGM and saiklon for their help

Well worth it mate, I had to extend the original loom a bit so it would connect without stretching the wires etc... And ive got to make up a bracket to mount the pack, but running well and easy enough to do.

I considered this yesterday due to 2 cracked coil packs. But Mad Hammer sorted me out with some singles @ £18 each so i'm sticking with them.

Pleased it worked well for you Musso.

What year car mate? Brand new coil packs are £65 each depending on your year, and you will have 4. I guess theyre charging you a labour rate aswell. Changing all 4 coil packs is an hours job at most. So who ever quoted you that much give them the

Ahh i think the newage coilpacks are quite a bit more expensive. Ive seen a few brand new ones on ebay for £85. But £110 is still a lot to supply and fit each coil.

Bookmarked this thread.
I did have a look at doing it a little while ago, but what info i could find made it seem really dauting and off-putting.

Mod i really want to do this year.

So whats the benefit, i mean, apart from the cost of the single coilpacks ?

you revert to HT leads which have their own issues

is this a mod only worth doing if running high boost for a long time etc ? Every day driving doesnt seem a benefit ?

hmm ???

Its well known that higher boost puts more strain on the 4 single coil packs. I dont know if this is different for single pack and leads? But every post ive seen where someone has upped the boost on their MY94-MY96 with coil on plug theyre having problems with missfires, or not reaching target boost. Usually the result is they check their coils and find cracks on them. Maybe that is why subaru decided to ditch them and convert to a pack and leads?

Newage coilpacks is another option, which i am told are a lot better than the old coils on the plugs.

My reason for doing the conversion was because i had yet another 2 coils fail on me. One didnt even have any cracks, but upon stripping it down i found that the wiring had become brittle and broken down. That was a genuine pack only 7 months old....

Im not saying everyone with coils on plugs should convert, its just another option rather than spending another £65 per coil.

doing somthing simalar but im using legacy coilpacks ( same as newage ) i paid £45 for the coil packs with the legacy engine loom second hand. i can revert back to the chocolait coil packs if i wish because the oe loom hasnt been touched only the legacy loom has been butcherd.

Yeah that is also another option. The only reason i didnt go for newage packs was because i had the oppertunity to buy a pack and leads at a good price. Good luck with it mate.
