Question How long does petrol keep for?

I've got half a tank of petrol which dates back to Feb or March 2010.

Can I still use it?

As a guide - I use BP Ultimate and have left it for up to 6 months in my tank while overseas.
I have never had any problems starting or noticed any discernible difference to performance.

would be best to go straight to the pumps fill up with v power and use some octane booster too as over time petrol loses some of its properties so do this and drive it steady until you empty the tank again and fill up with the good stuff. (once filled drive over lots of speed bumps and pot holes to mix it all up)

It does lose a good few octane points in time. I've got a Fireblade that was stood for a year (started monthly) after about 10months It just wouldnt start, Tried everything battery, plugs, leads, starter motor the lot. Eventually drained the fuel and replaced it with fresh and it fired up straight away! Like Krazycrab said take it easy run off boost and either get some octane booster or some 99ron in there to bring the octane levels back up.

Longest I've left mine in the tank is 2 years and it was fine.

Just run around off boost until you're near enough empty, then fill up with good stuff. You might not want to be too aggressive with the first fill up, but should all be ok with the next one.

Strangely, my motor mower WILL NOT START on fuel left in the tank over the winter, it always wants fresh stuff for the first Spring start. The first time someone suggested it, I laughed.

I drain the old stuff and once DID put a match to it, it burned but VERY smoky, and slowly.

It's 100 RON (I think) from Australia. I've got half a tank in the car I imported last year.

I need to modify the swirl pot in it though because in the Northern Hemisphere the petrol swirls the other way around.

The swirl switches on the Summer and Winter equinoxes.

wrong as usual -- although cars used in or around the equator do require a special map to cope with the fluctuating conditions

Not wrong .... it's just that the standard Subaru map knows what day it is and adjusts the time/space continuum to still allow the fuel swirl to atomize.

Mappers don't mess with this part of the map as it is difficult to get right.
