Default Need a mechanic's advice

Guys need some help, my work horse may be coughing it's last few miles. I have a 98 r reg 2.5ltr V6 CDX Vauxhall vectra estate.

Last week the oil light came on, so checked the levels and it was just below min so topped it up and it took roughly 1.5ltr maybe a little more.

Few days it developed a whining noise so popped the bonnet and it's coming from the belts so figured it's slipping but it's getting a load worse so back out to have a look and the bottom pulley wheel is wobbling like a ****, and the noise is getting louder with every journey. So took a small video clip. The pulley in the video does not appear to move but trust me it is, I would guess at 5ml each way (if that makes any sense)

Need to do a 6hr round trip on Friday as I can't get in to my garage untill early next week and I really need the car.

You may need to turn the sound up as it was taken on my iPhone. The noise is quite loud you an hear it in the cabin

http://m.youtube.com/index?client=mv...&v=kbcsZWFgY2U

Can someone in the know take a look at the clip and see if they can

A) tell me what's wrong
B) let menknow if it is safe to keep driving it

Maybe someone might work for Vauxhall and know what it is or has had a similar issue with another Vauxhall or even another make.

Have you looked at the pulley ?? some of them have a rubber mounting in the middle which can break away after a long period of time and cause vibrations and noises, It would be worth having a look at anyway

by what you have written it looks like the crank pulley/damper wants immediate replacement before it fails

+1 they have a rubber damper in them and if it is that id recommend against driving as the pulley could fly apart and throw the fan belt backward under the timing belt, very bad news if your on the motor way or miles from home

Any idea

A) if the last link worked

And b) if it is that what sort of cash i will be looking at to get it fixed as I bought it at the start of the year for £500 off eBay so not sure if I could justify spending silly money on it to be honest

does look like it is the pulley f**ked mate, and the grating noise is the pulley catching on the timing belt cover, you could get one from a breakers yard for about £10/25 pound dependent on condition and get it fitted for about £10/30 again dependent on where you go for work or even for free if you had a friend that could do it.

who ever does the pullley can check the tensoiner bearing when pulling it apart mate and as for the fan belt you could do a quick visuale check yourself, look at the driven face and if you can see cracking then get one but if its not been done for a while or at all id just get one any way there not alot of money.
