Default Castrol magnatec

I work in a motor factors so paying for the better end stuff for the car doesn't hurt as much, I'm going to do my first oil change this weekend and was wondering if anyone used 10/40 magnatec and if so is it any good ?

Cheers

A good few years ago there were reports of 'drag' using this oil .... it was not recommended for performance engines.

I don't know why oil is debated so often - Subaru, the people who built your car, say 10W-40 Semi (Shell Helix, I think?) ...... if you cannot seperate marketing hype from truth about oil then I suggest you stick to what Subaru recommend.

I'm an engineer and know that regular changes of oil is far more important than what oil you use. No good spending £45 on 4 litres of oil that will keep its properties for 5 years if you change it every 6 months!!

Good point pslewis, it's just a headache with all the options, our carlube book says 10/40 semi or 5/30 longlife, I'm going to use 10/40 semi just need to decide what brand

Dont be tight.... whats £45 for good oil such as Silkolene PRO S 10W-50 compared to the cost of a possible engine rebuild. One thing i`ve learned over the many years of owning a Subaru is that if you dont do it right the first time round, it costs much more the next time....

^^^ This is what I mean about people taken in by marketing hype^^^

I don't doubt that the Silkolene Pro Rally X Super Dooper S R Deluxe MegaTech Type X is a great oil ...... but at £45 for 4 litres? Nah! Waste of money! (you also need more than 4 Litres!)

And 50 is like treacle (saps power) - stick to 10W-40 ..... I use this mainly:-

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-990-fuch...productDetails

OPieOils want £18 ... you can get it for £15 if you look

Honestly - paying any more does not get you any better oil ... this Titan XTR is quality stuff!

Go out with the other half for a meal on the money you have saved yourself - and watch those who paid silly money sitting in MacDonalds!

i dont think it is

partco sell it for £21.99 for 4 litres

halfords cheap stuff (who some say is top brand stuff re-named,yawn) is £24.99

its where you buy it that makes it overpriced

Magnatec isnt exactly good for turbocharged engines, I would stick to something better, millers, shell, motul etc, magnatec has been known to cause issues on certain engines.

check what requirements you car needs then check on the oil container, if it matches then you are fine (Assuming standard car) If you have modified you car quite a bit then you may need something better. If you go for magnatec, it used to be part synthetic, you an tell this as it will say A3/B3 on the lable after the 10W40 part. There is a new version which is fully synth, this says A3/B4. Not sure if it is in full population yet, but the likes of Tesco have it in their distribution centres, Halfords do as well.
