Gearbox has been crunching in my car since i've had it but recently its been getting worse. Decided to check the oil levels in the car. Practically no oil in the engine and gearbox is on low.

Couldn't do an oil change so bought some Castrol magnatec 10w 40 and slapped that in. Engine was loads quieter but i was told the gearbox oil has to be put in while car is on ramps! Am i right in assuming that Shell Helix oil is the best one for the car. I have a little card that says to put only this oil in. Shell was closed to so only choice was Castrol. "Never" mix different manufacturers of oil together the handbook says, so im wondering now if i should just take the car to Main dealer and ask them to sort it out.

The 'box is filled via the dipstick hole so no need to have it on the ramp. However it would probably be a good idea to drain the old stuff and refill. You can do this yourself but no offence it does not sound like you are too mechanically minded. Take it for a service it would probably appreciate it!
