Hi All

I'm nearly at the point of selling my old girl.

Considering the pocket money price and the fact that she is an Impreza Turbo Classic .... I'm going to get some 'interesting' buyers around.

How do you deal with Test Drive? Insurance? Do you let them drive at all? Or play it all by ear? Do you ask to see the money first?

Or just chuck it in the Trade and let them deal with the tyre kickers and test pilots?

Normally I sell my cars and it all goes very easy ... but, an Impreza Turbo is not the same as a run-of-the-mill car, is it?

I had the same dilemma when selling my S15 last year.

You will get the dreamers and tyre kickers but I went with taking people out for test drives myself. At first I was going to allow people to drive it with proof of insurance but I just didnt feel comfortable with the idea.

The few people I met understood and were happy for me to drive.

I suggest advertising it everywhere. Ebay, AutoTrader, Pistonheads etc as you want it as visible as possible. Just be sure with eBay to state in the item description that the car is advertised elsewhere and that you reserve the right to end the auction early.

IMO, PistonHeads will be the best place

We have had the Gypsies around more than a few times knocking on the door wanting to buy it!!

I know that I wouldn't buy unless I could drive what I was looking at - which makes it hard for me to insist I drive only.

Would really like just an average person to come along, understand my concerns and buy it .... just thought, at the price it is worth you could almost risk it without it moving!?

I wouldn't let anyone drive it. Take them for a reasonable test drive with yourself driving, get the car up to temperature, take it up to a speed you are comfortable with demonstrating that all the gears work properly, demonstrate that it pulls up nice and straight and put it under some load in a higher gear to demonstrate that the clutch is ok.
Any genuine buyer should be happy enough with this . Its also a good idea to have a friend with you just incase of any funny business.
I would have thought you would have no trouble shifting a genuine unmodified one owner Impreza Turbo.

Offer to drive them round the block, then take the money and stash it at home, then let them take it round the block with you as a passenger, shake hands and walk away.

I shouldn't think there would be too much trouble selling - it's the hassle really for so little return!

I am now finding out that the car I want to buy may not be able to do what I want it to - so, it could all be academic

When i brought my Impreza Classic from a mid aged man, he wasn't sure if i was a dreamer or not as i'm 22. We talked about the car, he asked me some questions about insurance, i think just to see if i was serious, i come across as gunuine.
He took me for a test drive and i asked him to show me such things as steering was straight and brakes worked.
When it came to buying it, me and him went to his bank and payed it in there and then.

If people are serious then they should understand. I did everything in my power to make sure the car was fine despite not being able to drive it. Both me and him knew we both had to do what we had to do and in the end we both got what we wanted.

Also, get a contract drawn up, have two copies, one each, stating that the car is working as it should at time of sale and anything that goes wrong after they drive away is down to them! 'Sold as seen' if you like!!

Looks good ... but, it's a Vauxhall - however, the deals are eye watering for what you get!
