Hi guys
I had a test drive in a 1996 STI yesterday. The only thing that worried me about the car was when idleing in traffic there was a very strong oily smell coming into the cabin. Apart from that the car drove and ran perfectly and was in A1 condition.
Is this common? I take it was coming from a breather. Anyone else noticed this?

Could be a few things
I have just orderd a new rocker gasket for my WRX 94 as the other one is weeping and the oil dripping onto the mainfold. After a hard drive and you come to a halt it whiffs !!!
Check the bottom of the rockrs if its this they will probably be oily on the bottom edge

i 2nd lumby sounds like that look at the manifold on the off side there will be a sine of oil on itat the rear of rocker cover (downe past the air box)
the gaskets are only £25 and are very easy to do. enjoy

If it is from a breather that is an indication of wear.
However there is a common fault in that the cam cover can leak, particularly on older cars. Replacing the gasket is not always the answer as the weep is often from half moon rubber inserts which are easily overlooked & deteriorate in time.
Easy to replace @ same time as cam cover gasket.
Often no oil on floor just an odd drip which burns off on the hot exhaust manifold

just a quick note, dont forget to get it AA tested, for the sake of a hundred bucks or so, you could save yourself a lot of heart ache, plus he could shed more light on the oily smell!!
