Hello all

My dad has blown his second engine in his sti 4. The last one was fitted by a so say rally competitor and had a vast amount of impreza knowledge.

It blew with in 200 miles.

He's come across a website http://www.reconditioned-engines.co.uk they're offering a very good deal with a 5 year / 60000 mile warranty.

My dad has spoke to them and they state they mainly dealy with scoobys and evos.

I was a little concerned that they'd put in a uk lump or worse?

Your opinions would be very much appreciated.

be very cautious, not many engine builders give a warrenty only on the basis that you could have it fitted go and blow it up by ragging the ***** out of it, so just be carefull there are no clauses.

consider having a good builder build the engine, or just buy one of here and have it fitted by a local company.
just out of interesy did they say how much it was with the warrenty, u can get a basic full build for around 3 to 3 1/2 grand, from maybe, api, engine tuner, interpro, powerstation, the list is endless, ring around i would suggest.

Mines being done by David at Api he has done plenty of work on mine before and have found him brill. I only went there because he was so highly rated on here and i have found that out for myself!!

wouldn't touch them with a barge pole, you will more than likely get a get "well used" engine that has had a special £3.99 silver spray can engine rebuild, that probably wont last 5 moths/6000 miles let alone what has been stated, for the price they are quoting you would probably get a build from one of the specialist on here for the money, with change.

Dave at API is the first i mentionned to my dad.
I think he's trying to save a bit as the engine rebuild company quoted £1800 for the rebuild.
I realise there are always clauses but quotes are coming in around £3800 from the specialists. He has just spent a fortune with the first bloke only to return to find the roller shutter door welded up.

Been looking on here a lot for a lump but getting no where fast.

Any ideas which bottom end we can get away with without have to spend an extra 1k on a ecu and remap.

If i remember correctly Fiestaboy had a sti8 long motor for sale not too long ago and it was in perfect order, PM him and get more info as that would be a excellent reliable option

Spoke to some one to day about recon engines and said you would be lucky if it ran off there premises let alone for 60miles lol But honestly i would speak to David at Api before you make up your mind (Even if you dont buy from him he has got some great advice)

Was the person who built the first engine recommed, and did he have a good reputation. Did he give you a warrenty?

If this happened to me i would hunt the guy down. If that cannot be done i would just do it properly now and go to an engine builder of here with a good rep.

The pistons in an STi 8/9 motor do not suit a Vers 4. We had unending trouble with the STi 8/9 short motors that Power Station were selling on from the Litchfield type 25 programme. Especially in Vers 4 STi.

It is compression/det related, as the piston to block height on a version 8 differs greatly from a Vers 4 and choosing a correct head gasket thickness to make a workable compression can be tricky and beyond the wit of most " homers " [ No insult intended ]

I wouldn't entertain using a generic recon company for a subaru. There are some genuine ones out there, but most seem to be companies that pool used short engines and used heads, then combine them with cheap gaskets and a silver spray can to make a "new engine".

If you're dad has already been stung, don't go down the same route again, or you'll likely get stung again, and again, and again and get to the end wondering why you didn't spend the proper money in the first place. I probably see one of these "my mate did the rebuild now it's dead and I don't know how to deal with it" threads every month.

Do yourself a favour and get a sensibly priced rebuild from someone like API, with a warranty and confidence that it won't die in 200 miles.

Look in the for sale section, E.M.B is breaking a bug sti. Think the mileage was 42k and he's selling the full engine. Can vouch he's genuine, got some parts off him at the weekend and saw the car. Looks clean and genuine

these clowns are the subject of an 80 page thread of how they fvck you over and have been on telly too (Watchdog)

very good pre-sales, but once your car is in their hands the bill doubles -- and you wont be able to collect it from them without paying a large sum even if you refuse to pay the new "quote" they charge a fee -- and leave the engine bits in the boot

GUARANTEES

Engine:

The engine is guaranteed against a defect in construction for a period of 5 yrs or 60,000 miles (whichever is sooner). This is strictly subject to the engine servicing being carried out by us. The first service is due between 500/600 miles or 2 months (whichever is sooner) and thereafter every 6 months or 6000 miles (whichever is sooner). In order to benefit from the guarantee, all engine services must be carried out by The Engine Center.

INCOMPLETE WORKS

Once your original engine has been removed and dismantled for assessment, a situation may arise where you do not wish to proceed with the fitting of the replacement engine. Unfortunately, in these circumstances, we are unable to re-assemble and reinstall your original engine.

Consequently the dissembled unit, together with all ancillary parts will be placed in the boot of the vehicle.

We will charge for the work already carried out in removing and dismantling the unit & for any recovery/delivery costs incurred.

The labour costs of this usually between £200 and £500 plus Vat, plus recovery costs, and varies depending on the size and complexity of the job.

Keep them down.

Recipe for disaster. Avoid.

If an underlying problem blew the first engine and wasn't remedied with the second engine then the next replacement will be another anchor if not sorted.

Find a reputable engine company who also have the ability to monitor the situation afterwards.

Such a company may have already been mentioned.....
