Question WHAT TYRES?

Hi, i've got a my 1999 impreza classic running on newage alloys with 225/45/17 tyres that are nearly worn out. What tyre size should i go for and what tyre should i fit, i'd like a sporty tyre with a good wear life; i'm also on a bit of a budget.
What do you think?

They must be newage STI alloys if those were the tyres.
Did you have any issues with them on, as the recommended size for Classics are 205/40's on 17's. Was told this by Subaru.
